Habitat: GRassland - recently laid turf from supplier in uk
Gills: light brown attached, quite open
Stem: 8-9cm, 1/2cm diamater, light brown, slightly hollow, thin
Cap: 3cm diamater, medium brown, conical, does that thing where water affects it (very sorry for my forgetting the correct term)
Spore print color: medium brown/ purply
Bruising: none
Other information: really smelt like an active. I'm sure that's very common and don't expect it to be liek that. but smells more like a liberty cap than a button mushroom
cheers folks!

I thought as much. I figured if a common little mushroom like that is active, everyone would know about it. it's funny reading an entry in Erowid where kids have been taken into hospital tripping and parents have grabbed these mushrooms which have then been identified. I wonder if a few libs have been mixed in with them or something...
anyways, cheers again for your help

Erowid is limited in relevant and scientifically correct information concerning mushrooms. The story mentioned seems to be repeated every now and then, but there is no confident source of information stating that the identification to species in said case was ever correct. It could very well have been misidentified active Panaeolus sp., such as P. cinctulus.

I love erowid if you have a moment or two spare, I heartily recommend reading the Datura Train wreck style Experiences

some really really fucked up stories of trips (mainly to the hospital) and lots of phantom smoking cigarettes, which is odd

Yeah, Erowid is good entertainment but not exactly a science hub.

what do you prefer?
I'd say it's brilliant for that sort of stuff. people's personal experiences are rarely 'science' but there's lots of good information linked to each substance...

Stamets mentions similar anecdotes in his book, his theory is that any supposed "accidental hallucinogen poisonings" from foenisecii were probably mistakenly identified subbs or lib caps. If the subbs were growing among the foes, the parents likely wouldn't have the knowledge to distinguish the foes from the subbs. They bring in a handful of foes, tell the doctor that their kid ate them and started tripping, all of a sudden you have reports of psychedelic Pan foes.
Also, the field guide that I regularly use (Falcon's North American Mushrooms by Dr. Orson K. Miller) lumps all of the psychoactive Panaeolus species under the name "foenisecii", so it's likely that other field guides do the same. This probably contributes to the confusion.

My Italian tour is already arranged for next spring & I'm going to do the whole goddamn trip wearing a bright red field marshal's uniform & accompanied by six speed-freak bodyguards bristling with Mace bombs & when I start talking about American writers & the name Tom Wolfe comes up, by god, you're going to wish you were born a fucking iguana!" - Hunter S. Thompson, 03/03/71 Letter to Tom Wolfe.
