Online Community Struggles
    #21950643 - 07/16/15 06:45 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

So I'll be honest here. First a bit of back story.
I love mushrooms; I love picking them, eating them, sharing them, learning about them and 'experiencing them' (or 'myself on them', whatever). So after knowing about this forum for a bit, using the site as a reference for a lot of my information, I joined. I figured it'd help me learn more, share common interests and even participate in other non-mushroom related discussion.
Upon joining I wanted to become a bigger part of the community but have had difficulty, this isn't because of the nature of the people here, it's just my lack of motivation to post or a lack of knowing what to say.
I used to be a part of a smaller online community which manifested itself in the form of a forum and an online fan-based rpg (which also kinda just worked as a chat room), I really enjoyed my time there and got along well with the people there, and that was probably the first online community I really felt 'a part of'. Since then, that community doesn't really exist any more and even so, I myself have changed a lot since then (I was significantly younger).

Here's my issue, since then I haven't been able to really feel like I 'fit in' on an online community, which is something I really miss, of course there's things like Facebook, et cetera. But I want to feel like the community and I have a common interest/goal, or something along those lines.

Really I'm just interested to hear what people have to say regarding this (and I s'pose maybe this might spark my involvement here) or if anyone has felt similarly?
Regards.

I don't think I'll ever feel like I "fit in" here, i'm not even a particularly well liked member.

But I stick around anyways. :durrhurr:

This place seems like its great for just doing your own thing.  Also, the cliques here change out pretty frequently.  I've been a lurker since long before my reg date and it seems that way to me.

I'd say to OP just get in where you fit in and make yourself a place.  Usually works for me anyway.

From what I have read around here, the people seem pretty chill (for the most part), I s'pose I am being a bit a clingy to the idea of be /that/ connected with everyone (the old community I spoke of wasn't too big). I guess I will just do my own thing and see how stuff goes.
And not be a dick
or try to anyway, aha

With a community this size, how COULD you be connected with everybody?  The internet ain't what it used to be.

What's been getting at me lately is the insane amount of seemingly younger folk that have turned social media into this place of social warrior politically correct, male "cis-gender" weird world where it's completely okay to shred somebody up through twitter or what have you.  It's like its not okay to have an honest opinion anymore.

Don't misunderstand it's not like I don't agree with alot of the liberal stances politcally but it just seems like the most agressive people are the ones you see anymore because their responses are these 150 character poinient responses that cater to people with low attention spans.

Don't get me wrong the internet was always about giving the unheard a voice, it's just now its the most aggressive social justice warriors that just take pleasure in the attention waiting to pounce on anything anybody ever says that gets my goat.

Yeah a lot of people like to use " right to an opinion or speaking their mind" as an excuse to talk smack or project themselves onto others. It's pitiful.

I've definitely noticed this kind of thing. Seems almost like as people are becoming more accepting there's an equal amount of people becoming more criticizing. Just a thought.

This is the first forum I have belonged to, and certainly feel as though I am on the fringe and kind of looking in from the outside.  I wonder if what I share is going over heads or disregarded for whatever reason, sometimes.

There have been times that I have viewed the downright cruelty of certain members, and I have left before thinking it wasn't the place for me.  Just when I am ready to throw in the towel, I witness some awesome Shroomery kindness, and it makes me stay.

Folks here are so diverse that it isn't hard to find a friend or place to belong, just gotta' poke around-

From what I have so far gathered:  Don't take things personally and don't be afraid to be yourself, after all 'the people who mind don't matter, and the people who matter don't mind.'

It was kind of the same for me when I first started. A lot of members are kind of selective of who they reply to and generally respond more to more popular/well known posters. It's just part of being a N00b. Just keep posting thoughtfully and maybe make a couple threads here and there and it'll eventually get better.

Also, I found it beneficial to actually converse/respond directly with/to other members instead of just posting your opinion or belief in general because it will usually be skipped over. So instead of "I think abortion sucks." It's probably better to say, "BES, although I agree with some points in your pro choice argument this is why I respectfully disagree." When people know you're actually engaging them they're more likely to respond and your post doesn't get lost in the mix.

I changed my signature yesterday and now have a positive rating from my nigga daz.

Don't forget OP, a lot of people don't go by usernames and associate posters by their avatars. I'd find a unique one that you love and hang onto it.

The Pub isn't as forgiving as it used to be (they took off the rose colored glasses) so don't get butthurt. Learning the reply function helps too. If people don't know you and you're responding to someone else it may cause confusion.

And with the good people come the bad
.. there will always be trolls, and unfortunately due to the nature of this board there will be people with drug induced psychosis or downright nuts.

Treat anything with a grain of salt, don't get butthurt, and read the rules for each individual forum you post in.

I caught a ban two years ago in a forum I hadn't been in for about 12 years.. the rules changed but the sticky didn't have an update. Stickies are the posts that always show at the top of the forums and have a pin in them. Only moderator and administration can do that unless you're in a user created forum.

This thread is a testament to the amount of help you can get out of this forum. There's even a beginners forum.

This place truly is somewhere that the don't-belongs can belong. Fortunately there's no chat here anymore, but in the mornings and evenings there is an "EMC" or "LNC" to post in. It's early morning crew, late night crew. Seems to have evolved over the years to early morning chat.

Stay shroomy, man.

Malcolm, dude, be careful with 1234go.  He will pretend to be your buddy, but on nothing more than whim he will tear your heart out and snack on it with rxb in the pix of pubbers thread while you're just left gasping, thinking about all the good times you two shared, could have shared.  He does this "for the lulz" and only truly cares about himself.  1234go is ruthless, icy, and dangerous to your emotions and feels.

I would never wish on anyone what he did to myself and our blossoming friendship.

Regards.

I honestly relate to most all of this, but I've figured out the main reason I don't have a lot of people I talk to on here is because most of the time I'm just too lazy to post. Especially taking the time to wait for a response and have a conversation. My attention span is too short for that.
