First G2G

So I transfered from my master jar into 6 Spawn jars yesterday. Checked today and the growth is crazy. I had no idea the growth was that fast after doing a g2g. I'm use to MS inoculations and those growth times. Is the increased expansion rate a normal thing?

absolutely. When you do a grain to grain and shake, there is more going on than what the eye can see. Living mycelium is spread throughout the receiving jar in amounts that are largely invisible to the eye. Additionally, if your method is consistent, you are transferring the mycelium to an environment it already very happy in. G2G is one of the fastest ways to propagate a culture IMO.
The "longest wait" I feel, is the wait for the initial master jar(s) of spawn. After that, it's like getting on the interstate after small town 25/mph roads.

Its pretty awesome isnt it? Ill put a pint master into a 5qt spawn bag and its fully colonized in a week usually. I dont even find much need to shake after G2G

Would you recommend Spawn bags over individual quart jars? Seems more efficient thinking about it.
And yes the whole thing is awesome. I think I enjoy the growth and reaching the end product more than the actual fruits themselves. Creating a huge mass of living mycelium from speks is fantastic.

I prefer jars
Mainly because after a single shake my jars go 100% in a matter of a day or two
i have had negative experiences with bags. So I can not help you there

Great to hear about your first G2G. It is a rewarding feeling. For many reasons i choose to use glass jars. We avoid the use of plastics. Generally for environmental considerations and personally for healthy reasons. Many mushrooms have very powerful enzymes that allow them to react chemically with plastics. That is one of the many reasons that mushrooms are used for bio-remediation programs. Glass is reasonably inert and easy to recycle.
I could smell mycelium all day long

I think it depends on how much spawn you produce really. it definitely is more efficient.
I used to work like this
If you spawn 10-20 tubs at a time its a lot of jars to deal with. Also there is more room for error doing G2G into 5 jars vs 1 bag.
I like to go agar- pint or quart master - 4.5 qt bag - tub. 1 jar G2G into 1 bag for one tub. Keeps things simple and you dont have to wait for any odd jars to catch up.
Bags are tricky to work with at first though and much easier in front of a flow hood, or in a really tall Still Air Box.
Bags are dirt cheap too, considering a case of 100 bags will spawn 100 tubs, if you spawn 10 tubs per month that will ago almost a year

Got another question.
What do you guys do when you have a few jars who are slower then the others? I have some that are almost done but some who are only a little more than half.

Several options:
a) Spawn into different, smaller subs. Saves time and reduces the chances that all your grows will contam. Kind of an insurance policy
If you want to spawn all at once you can either
b) Wait until all jars fully colonized
or
c) Put the fully colonized jars in the fridge to stall growth
I recommend a)

If they're halfway done why not give them a shake?

A diagnostic shake at worst will reveal some nasty holding up the show and at best will let them finish up faster.
