Am I playing with fire?

So I got to thinking today about how it is strongly advised not to take any hallucinogens if there is a history of schizophrenia/mental illness in your family. Now while no one to my knowledge in my family has ever had schizophrenia or a psychotic episode but depression and bi polar seem to run in my family. From what I've been told my mothers father was bi polar. Also on my mothers side her aunt, her moms half sister as well as her mom's mom suffered from depression or bi polar or something along those lines. Then in my dads side there are his 2 sisters and mom that have depression. I was diagnosed with multiple things through my childhood and teens including bi polar. I just think I was a troubled angry child and am indeed not bi polar but rather mis diagnosed. I feel as though I have hashed out my problems and do realize I have some issues mainly getting angry and holding on to things as well as anxiety that I am working on.
So after the little blurb about my family's mental history I come t my question am I playing with fire taking psychedelic substances? I have eaten mushrooms many times in my life and the main reasons I use them is to help me with my biggest problem in life. Not letting things go. But I sometimes worry about the repercussions due to my family's mental history. Anyway what do you all think? Regardless ill probably still keep using them. I feel they have been greatly beneficial to my self improvement. I may add I dont use very much. Once a month at most.
-------------------- I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

If psychedelics are beneficial for you so far, then I don't think you need to be overly concerned. Simply try to be realistic about your mental health and the drug's effects on you overall. I don't think taking psychedelics will cause some latent effect. Rather you will notice a change happen directly afterward. Some people become depressed after taking mushrooms. And I could see how it could also cause a mania. Although, there isn't much serious scientific knowledge on what psychedelic's effect on those with mental illness could be. Besides, if we're to believe you, then you don't have a mental illness. Although, keep in mind that for someone to be diagnosed as bipolar they only may have one manic and one depressive episode in their entire life. The thing about bipolar is that basically it's a problem with a person's brain where they get stuck in certain emotional states. Normal people may feel sad about something for a day or whatever. But a bipolar might get stuck in that feeling for no reason and not be able to snap out of it naturally. The same for mania. Most people experience that emotional high of something like winning the lottery, but a bipolar can get stuck in that mindset as well. But as you probably know, it's not exactly known why this happens in the brain. So basically no one can tell you whether it's a risk or perfectly fine or even beneficial for you to occasionally use psychedelics. But the prevailing medical advice is generally that people with mental illness should stay away from recreational drugs, as they have a tendency to set off their symptoms, compound their situation, and/or develop a unhealthy dependency. If you need help coping with a mental illness, it is better to take the medicines prescribes for them rather than relying on drugs that cause a much bigger impact on the rest of your life. And I know this is the shroomery, and you are probably just young and enjoying the novelty of psychedelics, but I think a healthy occasional use of them would be once a year or less for most people. But who knows. Honestly, I come here to see how all the mentally ill are handling their drugs, especially psychedelics. These are powerful substances, with imo far too little study on their therapeutic effects. Who knows, maybe in the future it will be proven that occasional mushroom trips can help someone with a mild type II bipolar overcome, maybe not the extreme emotional states they get stuck within, but other states they may find themselves stuck feeling.

My uncle was schizophrenic and I've been using psychedelics for 8 years without any problems what so ever(in fact it's improved my mental well being).

I've got a bi-polar disorder, and mushrooms seem to bring out a kind of mania in me. Not the "shop 'till you're in debt and fuck whomever without thinking about the future mania" but more of a "take 20 mile hikes everyday & talk to birds mania"
So far, so good. My advice is to be careful, and be aware of your mental health, but don't worry too much.
