Looking for a decent microscope without breaking the bank, can anyone help?

I was planning on spending around $300.00 but I honestly don't know what they're worth. I just want something for spore identification, etc. Tried the search function, but a lot of the related threads are very old with expired links Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The microscope linked in that thread is the one I'm planning on getting.
Ah that looks and sounds perfect, not too expensive either Thanks for the link man!

I have the microscope as in the link except that it has only one eyepiece. I have a few gripes with it, but the biggest pain in the ass with it is that it doesn't have a dimmer. The translation stage they sent with it broke too . It was worth the money though, and they make pretty cheap cameras that go with these scopes.

This is the one I have, works great, I have nothing really to compare it to so I don't know if it is top of the line or not, it has a dimmer along with several other adjustments that can be made to alter the lighting on the stage. It uses an LED, mine came with a blue filter but I have never used it.

Look for liquidation/Receivership auctions. When a lab shuts down everything must go, and because these auctions are harder to find there isn't as much competition.
