I wouldn't suggest it. Ive never done it mind you but it could mess up your growth. Who knows if the pins wil be on the side you lay it on?

Go there and read what's said. Like is stated I've done it as well and noticed no difference, except that my cakes rolled around and I crushed a few pins. The nutrients don't magically get stronger if you put it on it's side, more surface area seemed like a good idea to me but they dried out a bit faster IMHO when sideways. I do suggest the wide grate underneath like stated in the link though. Good luck.

As long as you have the light cycle the pins will form toward the light meaning it doesn't really matter how your cakes are laying. It's just ideal to put the flat side down to prevent rolling like one of the other posters said. I've never tried it, but I don't see why the growth would be any better or worse.

I grew cakes one time. It seems like 2 of the 3 started pinning from the bottom and eventually I had to lay them over. Didn't seem to effect them at all.

Gravitational pull has much more to do with the direction the pins form than light does. Just pointing that out for the op

This is bad info. They were pinning there because that's where conditions were most favorable for them to fruit. By turning it, you took the soon to be fruits out of where they specifically chose to come out on. This unquestionably negatively affected your yeild by moving them away from where they knew they'd have the best shot at.
Don't put your cakes on their side. There is no pro, but their are a few cons.

This is what my cake looked like before I put it on its side:

If I hadn't done so, carefully, it almost surely would have fallen on its own, damaging pins and taking my soon to be fruits away from where they specifically chose to come out, unquestionably negatively affecting my yield.
But to answer your original question OP, I don't believe it will increase your yield to put your cakes sideways.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm still a noob, but isn't the yield based on the conditions being ideal or not along with having a max theoretical yield based on amount of water and nutrition? The only way turning them sideways would increase your yield is if something wasn't Ideal like your humidity and they all started fruiting on the bottom because of the higher RH down there from the water held and evaporating from the peralite.
If turning it sideways corrected this problem by keeping more of the cake lower in the higher humidity zone THEN it would increase the yield since more of the cake(now horizontal) is in higher humidity. Otherwise it would be pointless. Unless like an above poster posted with mushrooms flipping it, but to correct that a grated bottom would be best as they would have grown through the grate more than likely and the top would have been kept the same.
However the best thing about this hobby is that it is your own. Do it to your own preference however you like and however results come out better for you. Experiment a little, its fun. The reason everyone follows the TEKs is because they are proven, some are just more ideal for certain peoples environments. No TEKs would exist without experimentation/trial and error though, that's a fact! Good luck!
