Being in balance and harmony with nature

This oft-repeated idea seems meaningless to me.
First off it would seem that in such a scenario no significant change would be possible. Populations must be stable which is impossible.
Native Americans, before European settlers arrived, are sometimes pointed to as exhibiting this form of utopia, but that, of course, is total myth. Their numbers were simply too small to have a great environmental impact. High infant mortality and wars with nearby tribes kept the population low. Unsophisticated weapons made overhunting nearly impossible. Even so, they killed critters to live. It wasn't too harmonious to those animals who died to feed them.
ALL humans conform their environment to better benefit them. Land is leveled and trees are cut down and crops and decorative flowers are planted and so on causing the destruction of some animal habitats.
So what does this actually refer to?

Yes Padawan, you must withold this energy, Until you become a walking erection, And look to the children of your brothers, For they are merely advertisements of impulsiveness

Actually there's some evidence most tribal warfare was due to famine and food availability. When your people begin to starve... genocide. That's being in harmony and balance with nature.

^ good point, but don't forget the diseases. Shitting ourselves to death and dying of gruesome bacterial infections is in harmony with nature as well.

It's as if any planet/environment has a certain carrying capacity that when exceeded tips the scales of balance...

Even with low numbers they were able to cause quite a bit of environmental "destruction". Just one of many examples; http://smithsonianscience.si.edu/2011/05/native-americans-were-changing-environment-in-north-america-long-before-european-settlers-arrived
They were less efficient and capable of managing resources than modern americans are.

It's not a difference in kind but relative degrees.
It's about authenticity, and self responsibility?
