Please help identify (gymnopilus?)

I found these while hunting for ganoderma in southeast Georgia. They were in a tight cluster at the base of a dead oak right beside a piece of the tree that had fallen. They look to be some kind of active gymnopilus. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

It does indeed appear to be some type of Gym, although, it may not be.

I'm doubting that it's gymnopilus, but I'm gonna stick around and wait to hear an official opinion because I'm very unfamiliar with gyms in general.

I'm thinking Omphalotus olearius , not the best pics for identification purposes though, I can't tell if the gills are decurrent or not

Looks like Omphalatus in the first photo. Wouldn't it be O. illudens on the east coast though?

I thought illudens are bioluminescent. These don't glow at all

Now that I'm thinking about it O.olearius grows in Europe and O.illudens is found east of the Rocky Mtns while O.olivascens is found west of the Rocky Mtns. So yes, you are correct and nice catch.

Thanks! :-) but do you still think it's a species of omphalotus?

I agree with Blue that it could be an Omphalatus species.. Have you performed a spore print? Can you post more photos so we can see the details clearly?

I'm in southeast GA & have seen lots of Omphalotus species that look a lot like this.

not really/always. I've found them more than a handful of times and only once--after many attempts and techniques--saw any bio-luminescence (in the gills).

Ok I was under the impression that it was kind of rare for them not to glow. I guess I need to read up more on them lol thanks everybody!

the one time i saw it, i had to go into a dark room, wait for my eyes to adjust, take the specimen out of a box, and stare at the gills to see the luminescence. only managed to see it once on one fruit out of about twenty specimens.
the wife said she saw it too or else i would've discounted even my own 'success'.

Couldn't see the glow with the naked eye, had to do a long exposure high ISO shot to capture it:

Wow! Those are pretty! I didn't get any kind of glowing like that from what I found, but I also didn't try very hard either. I had just assumed it was either going to glow or it simply wasn't, no matter what I did. Maybe I'll find some more on my next foray and I can try different things and possibly see a glow. Either way, it was a learning experience and the more mushroom knowledge I have, the happier I am! Thanks guys!
