Big Lots Agar dishes

Found some great containers for agar culturing. They are disposables, clear top, 230 ml, about 2 cm high with four locking latches on the side. They are about the size of a regular petri dish, but a lot stronger. PP5, and I've tested them in my PC. I like them better than anything else I've found, even the GladTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtle rounds I found at $ General.I like the clear tops because I have trouble seeing through the sides of other containers. Big Lots has these in packs of 3 for $1.80.
I drilled a 1/8th hole in the top and covered with paper tape, folded paper towel and foil and pc'd for 40 minutes at 80 ka, my upper limit. Growing something, which is supposed to be BHT. Finally found something at Big Lots worth the money.

My goal next week during my days off is to somehow figure out a way to add pics. I knew I needed to for this thread to make it worthwhile. D'oh!
They are in the part with tubs and Baggies.
I drilled a 3/16" hole in the last ones I pc'd and have gotten a lot of condensation. Could it be the hole is too big? (covered with two layers of paper tape and foil.)

Here are the dishes. I'm using them, but not sure I've got them right. I drilled a single 1/8" hole, covered with two layers of paper tape. They seem to work pretty well. I've got two strains on their second culture on these. For a sixty cents a piece, they are competitive.

Thanks for the assistance on putting pictures in posts.

I'd just buy pasty plates. Those look annoying to lock and unlock down in an SAB where precision is key. Don't get me wrong, it'll work, but I can't be fucked to latch shit down while holding a needle about to push my alcohol lamp off the table and holding my breath.

I was able to put the fire out. Indeed, I haven't figured them out quite yet, and I've finally found the Glad rounds (at Wal-Mart in the canning section of all places), but the price on these is nice, as well as the size. At some point, shit, I may saw those motherfuckin' ears off and see if the seal holds. Why not? Making shit work seems to be a joy around here.
But you made your point, and made me laugh.

Nah they do look good, I'm sure if they only had two arms to latch down they'd be fine. All you'd have to do is unlatch them, do the work, set the lids down on top of the seals, and then latch them all when you're done.

Okay but pasty plates aren't twist cap. In fact some of my older pasty plates are becoming a pain in the ass to open in the SAB. I may in fact be in the market for some twist caps.

These from Big Lots do have some advantages. They are the right size and depth, and they seal well. I have a lot of condensation. I might need a larger hole and maybe only one layer of tape. For cheap, they work as well as pasty plates, except they aren't as flexible for Tiger drops.
Like everything, a work in progress.

Pouring dishes is way less of a hassle and way easier to keep from getting contamination than messing with Tupperware in my opinion.

Beginning to see the wisdom in that. I have petri dishes and some agar in the fridge, so it might be time to experiment with this on my day off tomorrow. Agar is frustrating as hell to me, but the results are very cool. Love watching the mycelium grow.
However, I do prefer pasty plates for Tiger drops, without a doubt. Unless I'm going to fight my way through learning LC or LI. Next month.
BTW, Walmart has some throwaway containers with screw tops at a good price, but they are too deep and too big for me. And I think that's about all the information I can squeeze into this thread.

Don't get me wrong pasty plates and techniques like tiger drop have opened great potential to a lot of growers. I just don't think people should skip the experience of doing dishes as well. Despite them being disposable and thus costing some money and or being hard to obtain if you live in weird places. It's great to have some around even if you do pasty plates.

Popping it out of a dish seems a little fishy. I'm pretty wary of doing it in a pasty plate too since you can't really see contams on a big ol piece of fully colonized agar.

I do it all the time with my tri plates lol. I also had the big agar plates that I would cut in half to tiger drop. It's actually really easy in a dish.
Flame sterilize, reach in through the edge of the tri plate and push up, the piece will just pop off. Stab then drop.
If it's a full agar plate, flame sterilize, cut in half, go in from the edge, pop up and drop. I flame sterilize between agar wedges on a full plate because I'm crazy. On the tri-plate I pop them all off first and then stab and drop.
Wait, is that even tiger dropping?

No, tiger dropping involves never touching anything and using the container it's in to pop it out. There's no stab, no cut, no flame sterilize.

When I had the full on agar dishes that I didn't like they were half the size of the plate, so yeah pretty big. But they always went into water for LI

I've got two Big Lots agar dishes growing out Golden Teachers on the left, and Texas yellow caps on the right.

What should I do with these. Both are showing nice growth. This is the second plate isolating these two from MS syringes. Sorry I can't get a better pic through the lid, but both are showing the fan formations now from the tomentose(?) growth. What should I do with them? Make a syringe and flood the plate, then suck up the water and inoculate grain jars? Or grow them further? I have BHTs fruiting and Mazas 75% colonized in BRF jars, probably my last PF teks, and 10 jars of oats starting to kick with KSSS ms, which I plan to do in a 20 qt mini. (I'm having such a good time.) Now, what next with these two plates? Where do I go from here?
Is this where second year students get stuck? Wondering what next? Or am I just an idiot, to go along with being a bald-headed old bastard?

Anyway, the Big Lots plates work well. There is a lot of condensation, however. Not sure what the remedy is for that.

Since I got the right jars--wide mouth half pints--I'm going to take you advice and do both. I'll take a couple of chunks to fresh agar plates and then liquefy the rest on brf/verm/gyp. 3 jars each (since that's all I can do at once in my crappy PC) of golden teachers and TX yelow caps. Thanks for the help.

I picked up some of those dishes last night. I haven't opened them yet but I think the lid is still cloudy rather than clear. I may try to work with them upside down so I can clearly see what is going on. I tried the small ziplock containers, but for me it's a problem that I have a hard time seeing what is going on with the growth.

Now that I've worked with these for awhile, I kinda like them. They've been through several PC cycles with no problem. With this light, I can see the culture just fine, better than I can through the sides on the rounds. 3 for a buck-eighty, not too bad. The ears aren't such a problem after you get used to them.
