not really.plenty of peoplehave posted bottle grows inoc'd with grains. and the reason we sterilize manure in bags with grains is because there's grains there, not because of the sub. you can open a jar of sterilized media any time, just do it in a sab or in front of a hood.

I have found grain much faster than liquid for sawdust. I have yet to try it with cubs though. I'll give RGS a try on my next set I think.

Cool guys, I stand corrected. Never seen that before. Could't imagine you could give those a shake. The rest of that post is spot on though.

I fill my bottles up to the 2 cup mark and then use 1/2 cup grain spawn. 2 1/2 cups will leave you with plenty of room to shake.

Sawdust can't be shaken. I make a center inoculation hole in using a 3/4 inch dowel for sawdust bottles. I think cub bottles made with things like CVG would shake fine. I shake them when I inoculate with liquid. You just can't over fill them or it gets tough. I have found that over filling them even slightly can result in an extra week of colonisation time dew to an inadequate shake at inoculation.
I'm using bags for my next set anyway. The larger substrate size will cut BE a but but they do seem like a lot less work. I know they are for sawdust anyway.

I'm mixing up a bunch of substrate right now. Oats, wheat, wheat bran, dog food, coffee, coir, manure, straw and gypsum. This mix looks really good. How many quarts do you think I should put in each bag. I'm using the ones you sent me. Oh and how much LC would you use per bag.

4 quarts is a good starting point. 10cc's of liquid culture is the suggested dose on bags that size. Some will disagree, but 4 quart bags of grain are sterilized for 3 hours at 20 psi.

So should I be pasteurizing or sterilizing my cvg? From reading this thread I'm guessing pasteurizing when spawning in open air which I plan on doing. Or does it not matter? I'm kind of confused by the responses here. I just don't want to deal with contams.

CVG can be sterilized or pasteurized. With CVG your just cooking the coco peat a little so the mycelium can devour it easier. If you wanna bucket tek it, you can. You can also PC it without much problem.
When you start adding straw or poo you should pasteurize.
