Re-hydrating large sawdust blocks.
    #21946864 - 07/15/15 11:22 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I've been making 20+ lb. sawdust blocks for outdoor cultivation in vegetable gardens. Sometimes, depending on where the blocks are placed, a block will lose too much water and seem too dry. It isn't feasible to soak the blocks. But would injecting water into the center of the block with something like a marinating syringe work?

Why wouldn't it be possible to soak them in a pail or garbage can?

Really I guess it would be more of a practicality issue. First, the blocks are in plastic bags in wooden fruit baskets. So they have formed to the shape of the basket. I suppose we could soak the whole shebang, but I think the biggest issue is having to remove the basket back to our shop, soak them, then deploy them again. Pretty soon we're losing money on them. If we could just inject them, it could be done on a regular maintenance visit.

HOWEVER - say those aren't concerns. Could we soak them in the punctured bags? And how long would we want to soak them for?

Thanks in advance for advice.

you could do either one.  look around and you'll find pics of people with elaborate drip or injection systems on large bags/blocks of shiitake and oysters.

Ive seen a simple tek where you take a plastic bottle filled with water and shove it upside down into a hole in the log. You could easily do this with sawdust using a plastic bottle or wine bottle. If you wanted to be artsy you can get these glass plant water feeders
