I recently tried to grow Phoenix oysters in straw. Instead of growing mushrooms I grew mold and some sweet smelling...stuff.
I decided to yeah the idea and put the whole works under my beans in the garden.
I used plugs btw and they are now going crazy with mycelium....question is-is it the right stuff...?
There was still a portion of slimy and mouldy area so I separated the good looking from the bad..? Not sure if this was the right thing to do!

You did the right thing moving a suspected contamination outside. If its white and smells sweet its healthy myc. Keep it hydrated and misted and u should get some fruits. Then you can transfer some flesh to a grain jar and continue the culture.

So should I leave it where it is? Or should I move it back inside?
I have it on a slotted tray right now on the ground under thick foliage.
Also I have a bag of straw that I'm still hoping does..something. I will take a pic when I get home. It's got some mycelium but has that strong sweet smell so I was worried.
I think maybe it's to wet but no idea how to dry it out =/ being a first timer is hard

Can't dry out anything getting colonized. You've gotta get the moisture content right at the beginning. Gotta leave it until it's ready to fruit. Leave the other shit outside too. Mist when needed

Misted....So I take it soaking it with my garden hose might be a bad thing...?
I suppose moving it somewhere shady and cool and not in the garden might be advisable?
And does anyone have a thread to an easy to follow beginner type grain growing I could read?
I have no idea where to get rye berries but I can get bird seed...can it have sunflowers in it?
I just want to do it right from the get go no guessing or making it up as I go like I'm used to doing.

Is there such a thing as free edible cultures? Or at least...inexpensive? I bought some plugs but they were....really wet...even had them replace them same thing so....yeah
Have been trying to grow from plugs but everything contams...tried pasteurized straw, sterilized grain and sterilized grass seed...all contamed.
Am very frustrated now
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Many sponsors have pretty cheap cultures. Maybe not in plugs but lc's or spores are usually cheap.
