After hearing the podcast interview with Marc Maron I have a new found respect for Obama. I think he is a pragmatist - I think you need to be to have his job. Most people don't understand how little power the President has. He's getting tugged from so many directions. Middle management. I think he could have done better with the War on Drugs, whistblowers, drones, etc... but who knows who has a gun to his head.

He has proven to be a great statesman IMO, the likes of which I haven't seen since JFK. I liked Bill Clinton at the time, but too much bullshit has surfaced about him politically. Clinton was a brilliant politician, but he was not a visionary. Obamacare helps us in our life, and I think this will go down historically on a par with Medicare and Social Security in terms of benefits for average Americans. The POTUS is, first and foremost Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. There has been war, but NOT for the same utterly corrupt reasons as war under the Bush administration. Obama is NOT a warmonger and obviously not a Republican with oligarchical or theocratic ideas.

+1 Agreed, really.. if you think Obama is so bad you haven't been around/haven't heard much about the 70s or 80s with Nixon who started the "War on Drugs", and then the fucking Reagan Administration, those were truly corrupt people and it's funny to me how some people can idolize them. As far as politicians in America go, Obama was the best choice on the left wing in the last two elections, to answer your question though OP, I don't think Obama is enlightened. (at least in the definition that I'm thinking of for enlightened)

The presidents we've had, as dissimilar as they seem from each other, are in fact much more similar in a deeper sense than they are different.  Regarding Obama, look up arms trading, drone warfare, and derivatives markets if you want to know how things really are where the rubber hits the road.  On the surface, Obama seems more progressive, but ultimately he's a centrist and his platform is not revolutionary in the least.  Things are much worse than you think.  Look at Wall Street.  They're the ones running Washington, not the other way around.  They can do whatever they want, and they do it.  There is no one policing the major investment outfits.  Obama is mostly ineffective -- look at Obamacare, it's not a solution at all (it's the unaffordable care act) and look at all the spinoff problems it's created.  No more full-time work for most young workers, fewer benefits for those who do have full-time work, fewer jobs in general, and premiums that most young people can't afford.

I could really go on all day -- in reality Obama is not a solution, and I fear he's turning out to be a much more mediocre president than we all had hoped for in 2008.  His biggest accomplishments have been Supreme Court decisions, for Heaven's sake.  Don't give him credit, he is in reality not a very good man, and an ineffective president in a fundamental sense.

This isn't the forum to have political discussions we're just answering the OP, I was about to say something about your post but I don't want to start anything sorry.
I've heard your same argument from right wingers and there's no point in arguing about it no one will ever see eye-to-eye on these things with basically opposing viewpoints, if you just met someone this is why you shouldn't discuss politics or religion you can get into heated arguments over stupid things and I would rather not thanks.

I am merely trying to counter the ideas presented supporting his enlightenment, or approximation of it, and illustrate how he could not possibly be enlightened.  If it veered too far into the political, then I apologize to anyone who feels that way.  I don't want to get into a political debate, either -- here or anywhere else.

And, for the record, I am neither a Republican nor conservative.  As I said I see Obama as a centrist, which means he is much less liberal than a lot of people think.

Oh I see, well I've seen right wingers say the same lines to me like you said about the arms trading, ObamaCare, international trade agreements etc. and you said you could go on and on so it sounded like you were going to argue.
OK he isn't perfect (or enlightened) but he's not what I'd call a bad president, I could also go on and on how I don't agree with a lot of things other presidents have done in the past.

I just don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be, he has done quite a bit for the country, and the unemployment rate in the country dropped since he's been in office.
I don't know where you get your facts, but there's plenty of links to show what he's done in office

Again I'm just giving my view I'm not turning this into a debate.
Here's one http://pleasecutthecrap.com/obama-accomplishments/

Well, I use Obamacare, and brother, it ain't cheap (and doesn't even cover some of the things I need).

That said, we just disagree.  So what.  I'm going to stop before this gets even more OT.

If anyone thinks John McCain would have done better then you are absolutely brain dead. Obama is doing the best he can within the parameters of his job and the people whos heavily influencing him. I wish obama could serve another 8 years because god help us of jeb bush wins the election.

Obama runs guns to the cartels, 'terrorists', and foreign governments.
His justice administration hasn't prosecuted anyone caught red handed in international banking for destroying the world economy.
He has prosecuted more whistle-blowers than all other presidents combined.
Many of his cabinet members are hold-overs from GWB.
His policies are in most cases worse than GWB.
He is the least transparent president.
Most every 'promise' he made during the campaign has been proven to be a bold faced lie.
All his cabinet members are involved in revolving door from private to government back to private industries for which they are supposed to 'oversee and regulate'.
He continually race-bates to distract imbeciles from anything of real importance.

Saying he would be 'better' than someone else is painfully ignorant. He's no better than McCain, Bush, Romney, Clinton, Gore, Kerry or anyone else in recent history. He's exactly as bad as any other major party candidate would have been or has been.

Same shit, different shovel.

God help us if Jeb or Hillary wins.

I would have to agree. I think he did the best that he could, considering the weakened position of the executive office. He has at times offered up transparent, almost philosophical criticism of what are commonly viewed as "his" policies (such as the the use of military drones), as though to indirectly communicate that there are many aspects of government today that are beyond the push-button control of the POTUS. If his recent criticism of the U.S. justice system is any indication, I believe he might also blossom as a social activist.
