Getting heated on the internet
    #21945014 - 07/15/15 02:09 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Does the act of reading a opinion rather than hearing one your opposed to trigger some sort of cognitive dissonance in the brain making you lash out more than if you were talking to someone in real life?

Depends on the person, but generally yes. The internet is mostly anonymous. We're all so disconnected that what someone thinks of us because of what we say or do just doesn't hold the same weight as it would in the real world.

We get to hide behind computer screens. If someone told you in person their mother died, you would most likely say something supportive. On the internet you can say you were raping her as she was dying and you won't face the consequences you would in real life.

Extreme example but it translates to pretty much anything as far as "what you say" goes. Get involved in a touchy subject and a heated argument while talking to someone in real life, and you might end up in a fight. There's no risk of that on the internet, so people are more free to say what they think than they are in real life.

Of course this doesn't always apply. I have known some truly stupid people who will say all the wrong things just like a "troll" on this site would and not even consider the consequences. But that's pretty rare. Most people are much more conservative in real life than on the internet.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way.
I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today.
Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear.
I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear.

You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being
With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

i wouldn't call it cognitive dissonance, i'd just call it having anonymity.

I disagree.. One of my roommates loves to argue anything and everything. Even if he doesn't agree with it himself. He will argue to the point where you can tell he is about to swing on you because he is fighting a losing battle. I stopped talking to him all together because I don't want to be the one to knock him on his ass and have that reality hanging over us every time we are in the apartment at the same time. But yea.. point is, people that want to argue, for argument's sake, don't need anonymity. They get off on it and will do and say anything to get them an inch closer to orgasm.

That's why I stay :maximumtrolling: ... Sometimes xD

on the internet you can't tell if someone is serious or not most of the time, so when it comes to benifit of the doubt, typically you are going to just doubt.

Whereas in person, you have social q's to tell if they are serious or not.

Also in person, most people don't say shit just to piss you off (trolling) because they'd fear getting their ass beat, internet doesn't have that issue, so again most people just assume trolling.

all that leads to alot of people trolling, and alot of people lashing out.  And it gets annoying when you are trying to have a debate, and you get the shit on both sides of that happening, or can't tell which is happening.  at this point i just assume everyone is trolling so i have less to think about

i also think because we don't have social q's, we instead create our own personal sets of 'word' q's that trigger reactions instead, both positive and negative.

in otherwords when we are trying to have discussions i think were all looking for different things, so we all get different 'triggers' so its a clusterfuck of whats actually happening compared to reality

Facebook/Youtube comments INFURIATE ME. I have no idea why I bother to read them. Most of the time I read them just to make sure people are going to be saying the stupid shit that I thought they would. I try not to get involved unless it is people that I know these days.

By the sounds of it I'm lucky I have never gone to Tumblr.

nah i'm usually polite and open to other people's opinions, or at least that's how i view myself. it amuses me when people can't discuss issues without resorting to ad hominem attacks.

I was high as fuck and it was 4am haha. I know the right usage but often times I'll type words I didn't mean to type like horse instead of dog. If I don't reread stuff before I post it welllllll....... that happens
Does anyone else do this? I get worried when I realize I'm doing that.

I always scroll down to read the comments because I know they will be hilariously absurd insults.

Oh for sure. Lots of keyboard warriors.

It makes it easy to dehumanize the person behind the screen arguing with you.

There's a similar sort of effect with people in costumes in public that I've noticed, I worked as a lighting tech in the entertainment dept at an amusement park a few years ago and once they went into their halloween season there were actors all over the park in costume, all of them wearing rape whistles, usually with handlers nearby out of sight because people are ASSHOLES to them. In a way that they'd never ever act towards anyone on the street.
