Hallucinogenic salvia set to be banned in Canada * 1

Hallucinogenic salvia set to be banned in Canada

http://globalnews.ca/news/2110702/hallucinogenic-salvia-set-to-be-banned-in-canada/

OTTAWA – The Conservative government is expected to fulfill a four-year-old promise to add salvia to its list of controlled substances, Global News has learned.

After making the promise in 2011, Health Canada is set to add the sage specifies S. divinorum to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, making it illegal to possess, traffic and produce it.

“We've done our due diligence, we've done the studies, we know that these are used by young kids as hallucinogens,” Paul Calandra, parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, said in an interview.

“They aren't healthy, they’re not safe, and that’s why we are moving to listing these as banned drugs.”

Salvia is found in a powerful Mexican plant that can cause hallucinations, memory loss and anxiety when smoked.

The high only lasts several minutes, and most people smoke it only once or twice, says Peter Addy, an associate research scientist at the Yale University School of Medicine.

“It hits you almost instantly. It crosses the blood brain barrier and it leads to a very intense and short-acting experience as opposed to eating or drinking it the way that it’s used traditionally,” said Addy, who’s been studying the drug for five years.

“It can be kind of anxiety- and fear-inducing if you do it under the wrong circumstances or if you’re not really prepared for it.”

Salvia is currently regulated by Health Canada as a “natural health product” – but no one is licensed to sell it.

Years after an accident in British Columbia and a 2006 death in Delaware, the government says it is finally acting.

The Liberals say there isn't enough evidence to prove salvia is harmful or has long-term health effects.

“The problem about this government is that it makes decisions based on some kind of ideological whim, and not based on good evidence,” said health critic Hedy Fry.

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association says criminalizing salvia isn’t the answer either.

“We don’t protect youth by criminalizing them. Putting youth in jail for the use of this substance is clearly counter-productive,” said policy director Micheal Vonn.

But as the Conservatives gear up for the election, a source says salvia will be added to the list of controlled substances any day now.

Seems to be a common side effect when 'taking government'..

Oh for fucks sake! So the reasons that the politicians use are:
  • That most people try it once or twice, SO LET'S BAN IT!
  • There are two (2!) deaths attributed to it, SO LET'S BAN IT!
  • People might be anxious for a few minutes, SO LET'S BAN IT!

Yep, makes perfect sense to me.

I don't like salvia but it's silly to ban it, isn't it a popular plant many people grow in their gardens?

I am sure one could still continue to grow it in a garden without too much issue.

I love this plant and its effects. The people that want to ban it are just scared of it, of feeling 'anxious ' lol. It's not about protecting anyone from it. It's about their fear and they can't let it go. People  will still grow this plant and  consume it. A lot of good the ban will do. I wonder how a person believes that banning something actually deters the use of a drug. Their just scared of losing control. But they never had it.

Yeah, of they're even able to make sense of what a gun is... But it's another one of those info things; such unfortunate incidents occur as a direct result of suppression of the drug, suppression of clinical research, and therefore information about the drug, thereby disallowing any semblance of a proper integration into society.

“The problem about this government is that it makes decisions based on some kind of ideological whim, and not based on good evidence,” said health critic Hedy Fry.

Global problem, not just Canada. On the contrary, parts of Canada were more tolerant of weed before the states started. A vast majority of the world sheepishly followed the states' intolerance of psychotropic anything, and now they're all behind progress... The states, being the bully that it is, says "you're not allowed to lift your ban until well after ME!"

So kudos to countries like Uruguay who are making real progress with drug reform despite the big bully's wishes.

You inspire me! However, to me, the difference between being forced into secrecy/hiding about something and being able to be open/public without fear of repercussions is like night and day.

And for goodness' sake! Somebody please start a revolution that puts alcohol and tobacco in a light of scrutiny, regarding safety and health and comparing them with other "less legal" substances
I'm aware that the horse of this subject is not only a dead one but has now become an undead zombie horse that's zombifying everybody. Undead though it may be, this point is somehow still "underground," "countercultural" thinking, whereas it's so simple, it should be common sense. Are alcohol and tobacco safe and healthy with medicinal value to boot? And don't forget big Pharma. All I'm saying that this message of simple comparisons of taken-for-granted legal statuses hasn't really been heard. I guess a statistic recently came out about most Americans now believing alcohol to be more dangerous than weed, which is truly astounding progress, but they've stopped there. I hope we can continue that train of thought, but with more expediency and gusto.

Hear, Hear!
I'm thankful as well. They are always looking out for us by having double standards/illogical methodology.

Ex:
You can't have that drug, only this one which we know can kill you and is highly addictive.

Don't rob anyone, that's our job.

War? Legal, yes of course it's scary but it's a necessary evil.
Murder? Of course it's illegal!

Salvia? that comes from Mexico.  Hmm Mexico, poor people, different skin color, different language...well I don't know much about salvia but Mexico sounds scary enough. You know we wouldn't want Canada to turn into Mexico.  We can't let this Mexican plant stay legal.  Let's ban it.
