Fruiting thru plastic lids?

I've got a few jars of Lions mane. Could I drill and sterilize a plastic wide mouth lid, swap it onto a ready to fruit jar of Lions mane, and fruit through the holes?
Does the mycelium itself need the gas exchange or can it get that through the mushrooms growing thru the top? I've read its bad to grow through metal lids b/c the mushrooms might uptake heavy metals. The plastic lids are BPA free.. any reasons this wouldn't work?

My lions mane fruits in vitro with the polyfill in. If you want nice puffballs you would need to top off the jars of grain to the lid then place your drilled lid on top. Otherwise you will have puffballs inside filling the airspace in the jar. Best way to do this would be break up one colonized jar and use it to top off a few other jars. Sounds like a plan

Ya, forgot to mention they are jars of wood chip/sawdust and spawn. Filled to the top. Guess I'm gonna try it then.

So I assumed the height of the plastic lid would be the same as the metal lid but I could see about a 1/4 or less air gap. I have a few jars to play with so I tried it. I could see the pins form directly below the holes where the air and light hit. This is the result. I'll have to wait and see how many pins formed and aborted under the cap in the air gap later after its done fruiting but so far im considering this a success!
I have a jar of Blue oysters ready to go as well as more LM jars. Going to experiment some more after I get the reishi sorted out.

Thats a cool trick! Do you think this would work with a metal lid? Im curious why pastic?
Let us know how the oysters work out, i would love to try this with hericium americanum and pleurotus pulmonarius.

It's doable w. Metal lids, it's just I read the mycelium can uptake heavy metals, especailly since the metal lids tend to rust at the spot where you drilled the hole. It causes the mycelium to turn black in the adjacent areas. Plus they'd rust even more inside the martha. The plastics bpa free, and food grade.

I have seen a few guys paint their jar lids because of the rust. I just consider the metals some extra chelated minerals for me
In all reality it probably is better for me to get away from metal.
Maybe thats why some hericium species' fruiting bodies taste "off" sometimes. I bet the taste is effected severely by metal/mineral absorption.
Thanks for the info!

no, they just get bitter when grown over 70-75F

I have heard that too but then people get funky ones with a cool fruiting chamber. Could the heat from metabolism be creating microclimates inbetween the bags that makes them bitter? Sorry for the rookie question im new to gourmets and want to learn more before i try to culture a bunch of hericium.

Guess Ill be chowing down on some bitter lobster tasting mushrooms in a few days. (been just below 80 in the martha)
Sure doesn't seem to negatively affect the rate of growth.
Toadstool: Plastic lids are cheap and only need a few per fruiting cycle. I guess paint could work but again, id be worried about chemicals.
Ill try to keep you updated on the grow, I have 2 more LM jars as well as 2 more medium bags and a jar of blue oyster, ill post all my successes and failures.

I already have made up grain jars (metal) so i was jut trying to cut corners and save some money.
Does LM actually taste like lobster? I love lobster have never partook in LM so i have no idea what to expect from it

I've only managed 3 before I lost the last lot of PF's to trich but yea, like a chewy white meat. And in butter, taste a lot like crab/lobster.

Thats awesome! I cant wait to try them out. Other than their CO2 intolerance i should be fine. I will probably do agar wedges to grains and try this method but i might do some agar slurry inoculated pf jars first to get the hang of their life cycle and preferences.
Thanks again for the info!
