Not active for sure. Possible edible like the above poster said, though I'm not really great at IDing anything that doesn't bruise blue or look like a morel/chanterelle.

They have had what they love most taken from them, be it freedom, love, money, or anything for that matter. When you lose your greatest love you also lose your greatest fear, when that happens you are completely and utterly free.

Compare to berkeley's polypore and black staining polypore. Staining from cutting/handling will be the give away if it's the latter.

yeah it would be pretty unheard of to find a maitake this time of year in our region!

My parents have the same growing in their yard. But that doesn't look like any maitake I've seen - especially in the wild. And as previously mentioned, it is the wrong time of year.
I know that at least one strain (rosette rather than shelf-like) of chicken of the woods is fruiting now, but they're typically more orange. I'd be interested to hear more about this ID as my parents have 3 or 4 clusters like yours in their yard right now. I've avoided them because they were too different from the chickens I get from the same yard, but I admit I've never investigated lookalikes. I suppose it could just be a different color variant.

Meripilus sumstinei http://www.mushroomexpert.com/meripilus_sumstinei.html It's edible, and pretty tasty, But the texture is super tough and stringy. and it turns completely black when you cook it.
