Should I cover my myc setup?

Hi guys. So, I have some jars with corn, that I inoculated with mycelium on agar like 3 days ago. I have it in a plastic box, filled with water (with an aquarium heater it creates some kind of heating system, I have like 68 degrees F in my apartment), the whole setup looks like this , and my question is, should I cover it up with a piece of plexiglas? I did that, and it got all wet in a short time, thanks to condensation obviously, and I'm not sure if it was a good idea, I'm a little bit scared of contamination. The water has like 95 degrees F, so it condansates kinda quickly...and if I leave it uncovered, the corn will just dry up, and the mycelium will die then...sho,what should I do? The lids of jars all have a hole in them (5 mm diameter I think) with a cotton wool filter, so it can dry up.. Thanks for your answers.

It will not dry if the grain was properly hydrated, id definitely take it out and kill the heat. Just put them either in a tote with the lid loose or on a shelf. 68 ° is just fine.

You should not be creating a "heating environment" for colonization purposes, especially with water...
You can colonize your jars just fine at typical room temp (68-75F).
If you are experiencing room temperatures that are in the lower to mid 60's you could use a seedling heating pad NEAR the jars not under them or touching them.

So you're all telling me to get rid of the water and heater? The temperature doesn't go under 67 or so,so this should not be a vig problem, but I thought (and read) the ideal temp would be around like 86 degrees or so, minus the loss in the water and glass...I knew it can increase the chance of contam, I was just scared of too slow grow (like 3 months or so,these are all like 250-400ml (8.4-13.5 oz) jars..and the corn has been soaked in water for 23 hours, then boiled for 80 minutes, and then sterilised in a pressure cooker for like 70 minutes at around 248 degrees F..so I think it is hydrated, almost all seeds are cracked.

I am not familiar with the preparation of corn as a spawn, so I can not comment on that. I too read somewhere on here that 86F is ideal, that was misinformation. There is no need to incubated or heat your colonization area. Temperatures above 83F for jar colonization is pushing it...

Alrigh,so I'm turning of the "central heater" and doing it "all dry"...then I won't have a problem with covering it ,because it won't be neccessary..so,thank you all.

dont go over 75F. the inside of the jars will be hotter. heatbombs and whatnots can ruin more than they help.
jars colonize best when left alone on a shelf in room temp.

Oh, should it be in the dark, or can it be on some slightly light place?

12 on 12 off light cycles from the start.
Nonononono- 86F is waaaaaay to hot. Internal temperatures rise do to the organism giving off heat as it grows, so if you were at 86F internal would be 90F+. My house is around 65F all day and things are comin along just fine. Sure "sweet spot" is a little higher, but havin it lower makes it more difficult for contams. Adding heat is generally a recipe for disaster, and having them sit in water can't be good either.

Cool. Honestly if you can provide even indirect sunlight for 12 on 12 off it will be beneficial.

Alright, will do. There's some air exchange in there, so it won't be so humid, but I think it'll do right..and there's indirect sunlight lol, it hought it should be in the dark..

Yeah you don't want colonization period to be humid. Dry is actually better. Do you have sfd there for Gas exchange?

Yeah, I don't want it completely humid, just like "I-hope-this-stuff-wont-dry-out" humid..I'm sorry, I don't know what sfd means, if you mean the filter on the lid, no, it's just cotton wool..

you really dont wanna get cotton wet. nasty stuff will grow on it. get synthetic cotton, polyesterfill/polyfill. or just cut open a pillow that's stuffed with polyester. should say so on the label.

RIght, I know what ya mean, but...won't have that too harsh fibers, therefore worse filtration of air? I think I have some stuff like this somewhere, but I thought those makeup-remover-pads (1/4 of it to be exact) would be better..

no cotton is organic and you want something syntetic. you wanna take a large puffy ball of polyester filling and fold and roll it to a hard little ball, twist one end and pull it into the hole in your lid. so tight that it just wont move anymore.

I honestly wouldn't remove what you have for filter unless you have a glove box... Dont remove that cotton in open air. Id leave them be, ive seen people use it not knowing what poly was and things came out fine as long as its not soaked and its in place tight. Its up to you what you do but the jars have def been played with enough. Good luck and im sure they'll be fine if your grain prep was up to par
