Myco/grow bag..help!
    #21941023 - 07/14/15 08:17 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hi! I have a grow bag that i inoculated (or incubated? noob here) with spores a month ago. As far as the mycelium growth goes its about 75% covered. The problem is i left for three weeks and forgot to make sure the bag was in a dark location. It got indirect sunlight for three weeks. So when i got back there were two visible mushrooms growing ( not strait up because the bag was nt straitened out). Im happy to see growth, but the mycelium has nt colonized fully yet. So my questions are:

-Should i put it in a dark location and wait for the mycelium to colonize fully? Even though there is growth happening.

-Or should i put a 12/12 light on it and just leave it and hope for the best?

-Also, if i put on the light and continue the fruiting, will the mycelium still colonize the whole bag AND produce mushrooms?

I have been reading, but people say different things.
THANKS!

btw this forum is great!

If it fruits before full colonization it could be contaminated. Bacteria would be my first guess. Photo would help.

The bag one month ago:

The bag now.
You can see the two fruits on this two photos:

This is what is left to colonize:

It may be difficult to see on the photos but it doesnt seem like there is much pinning going on. So i think im gonna try to keep it in the dark for another week and just see what happens.

I'm sorry, but that looks like a goner. Bacteria has taken over the uncolonized parts.
You can put it to fruiting conditions, but I would not expect too much.
Make your own bags, try pf-tek or do a monotub. You will have much better results.

hm, ok. But if i get fruits, will it be harmful to eat them? or is it just screwing up the flush?

It is an unwise decision to eat anything that goes south. You definitely have a contam growing in there. Go dig a small hole outside, dump that bag out into it, mix in a little horse shit, and cover it up.  maybe you'll get something out of it in the end

f**k..this is depressing.. :frown:

But if the mycel contiunes to colonize, will it then be false alarm?

I concur. I've gotten a fairly sizable amount from my outdoor contam pile.

Ok, but i dont have the option to do that..sadly. would it be possible to open the bag and remove the uncolonized parts and just put the colonized in a fruiting chamber? Cause that i have. Substrate is brf and verm btw.
And if you dump it in a hole and get fruits, how is that any different from getting fruits from the bag? At least in the bag you can see that the mycel is contaminated, something you cant outdoors, so there might as well be bacteria on the subsrate?? Please share your knowledge :smirk:

Honestly, the fruits should be fine as long as they look fine. However if you have a contam you want it as far away from your grow space as possible. If you were to fruit it you would probably destroy any chances you have at future/current attempts. If you don't have space outside, I'd say take the fruits you have, chunk the rest, and call it a learning experience. My first time to grow in years was just a few months ago and I totally messed up the inoculation techniques. Leaving me with only 4 of 20 jars making it. I learned (or relearned) from my mistakes, and so far have only lost one jar out of 25.

Okay. I am going to keep the bag in the dark for another week, and then see if the mycel has spread further. If it hasn't I will just throw it away. :frown: Learn by doing  Thanks for the help!

But i still wonder; If you dump it in a hole and get fruits, how is that any different from getting fruits from the bag? At least in the bag you can see that the mycel is contaminated, something you cant outdoors, so there might as well be bacteria on the subsrate?? Wouldn't this also account for mushrooms in nature? I mean, you can't tell if there is any biological contam (like bacteria) under ground, and then they might have fruited early also. Just wondering.

what is in those grow bags?

darkness has nothing to do with early pinning, contamination or compression has.

okay. I thought maybe the daylight had triggered the pinning. But then again im a newb xD The substrate is verm and brf i presume.

verm and brf are usually put in 1/2 pint jars for a reason.
bags like that are bound to get compressed from their own weight and water following gravity down.

the mix looks real dark and wet, did you buy this or make it yourself?

I bought the bag. It looked very dry when i got it, so i was a bit conserned. But if this is caused by compression, and not bacteria, will it be okay in the end?

I guess you can try to give it massage. Spread the mycelium all over the bag and see if it recovers. That's what I do with my rye bags and I don't see any reason why it would not work with BRF/Verm bags.

The mycelium has taken over the hole bag, despite some said it looked like bacteria had taken over some of the substrate.

Im thinking about taking a spore print of one of the fruits inside. Any thoughts on that?

I also got some blue dots on the mycel, but it just looks like bruising to me.

Just wondering what you guys think about it. Could it still be contaminated with bacteria even though the mycel has spread?

Bacterial for sure. You can try taking a spore print of that fruit in the last pic, but I'd let it mature for a little while longer. :goodluck:
