I did this 5-6 years ago and iirc the less likely it is for a couple of genes to undergo recombination the less distance between them in centimorgans. IDK shit sucked tbh.
A morgan is what, some arbitrary distance in terms of codons? Like 6.22 x 1011 codons distance or some such nonsense? Urrrgh.
Well since the centimorgans correspond to recombination frequencies you cannot assign a fixed megabase length to a centimorgan since recombination varies across the genome and therefore the length of a centimorgan varies correspondingly. Its boring oldschool genetics, never liked it. Molecular genetics on the other hand is much more intriguing and useful.

well, you clearly are a willing participant in some of the most difficult study apart from mathematics. and out of sheer boredom.
good for you.

yeah, well, not really. you study it, you can learn it. no a priori knowledge and sophistication (tee hee a pun) is required.

That's why I'm gonna start early with the genetics, as soon as my textbook shows up in the mail. Hell, I think I'm already off to a good start now that I'm thinking about what the fuck a centimorgan actually represents. Thanks for contributing to the mitigation of my inevitable nightmare, plambe.

I studied genetics and biochemistry as a student. Now I work something totally unrelated but study organic chemistry in my free time cause its sick shit with all the mechanisms, spectroscopy teks, orbitals and all that stuff.

Ochem is definitely my favorite. I'm hoping something at uni will be similar for me, I had so much damn fun in that class. I wish I could just do ochem all the time. When we got to reaction mechanisms and synth pathways I had to pinch myself, that shit was so much fun. Hard science just shouldn't be that much fun. Sometimes I still wonder about my major.

Lol. Come to reality bro... My answer was short & sweet. I could've written a paragraph or two about what motivates me to work but at the end of the day that's whats going to pay for your meals & more.
Do you work for free "to better society"?
I don't understand why half the threads turn into a pissing contest. Just answer the damn question to the OP & move on. Sheesh...

Seriously though, my main motivation is boredom. I am very much a type B personality and I'm pretty much happy as long as I get to eat.

i was just busting your chops for such a lame boring ass answer. it's ok. we all work to pay for our meals and our shelter, and you know, nothing else but...because we live in a world that values nothing. it's OK.

Gives me a sense of purpose, and normalcy(which for me, is sometimes kind of a necessity). I want to be proud of the work I do, regardless of what it is. If the environment is stimulating or fast-paced enough(like working as a bartender or server even), I will enjoy it - -but really what I want is a career that constantly intrigues me and keeps me on my feet, and the ever-changing state of the tech industry does just that. I want to be able to talk for hours about what I do.
I find my current job challenging but very gratifying, and hardly boring. I'm making a career shift that's gonna take a bare minimum of year to get in gear, going back to school for it, mainly motivated by the demand for work, I also find it gratifying and challenging - and after having spent the last 5 years working in dark theatres at very odd hours for pay that isn't all that great compared to the workload, I kind of crave the 9-5 office life, oddly enough. I also like that what I'm going into can literally take me anywhere in the world(within reason, as I doubt the Masai tribe is looking for a web developer anytime soon), I even have to option to work for myself - which I doubt I'd ever do, at least fulltime, as the stress of constantly being on the lookout for work is one of the reasons I'm tired of working in live entertainment.
I'm really gonna miss the work environment and just how eventful and exciting it is, but if I really missed it I could probably find a way to do it in a smaller capacity.
