New Horizons makes it to Pluto today!

Idk how no one's posted this yet. I mean it's not landing on Pluto but it's doing a flyby and I believe it's the closest it'll ever be, today.
What do you think we'll find in Pluto? Aliens building snow men. Erhm. Snow aliens Superman's fortress of solitude? Are you excited? I for one fucking love space and am super excited. Shits so fucking rad.

The pictures should be out sometime on Wednesday, from what I've read. This is the closest one that's been sent back, the New Horizons antennae will be pointed away from Earth as it focuses on its target.
Man. This must be what the moon landing felt like for the people back in the day. I know it's probably not as spectacular as a man on the moon but holy shit batman, we fucking made it to Pluto.

. From what I read the pictures won't make it to earth until Wednesday as far as I know, since it has to orbit around Pluto to sling shot back but yeah man. The hype is real.

Yeah but we won't know anything for a while. It is going to go incommunicado while it collects data and then it will send it after awhile. It will take a few hours for the data to reach us as well. I think it has already made its closest approach at 7:50 AM but nothing will arrive until 9:00 PM.

We've made it much further then pluto, I believe it was voyager one that already left the solar system years ago.
And it contains a gold plate made by Carl Sagan that details where we are in the galaxy along with various music, greetings, and animals sounds if anything comes across it.

Right now it's just sending small thumbnail images of Pluto the can be downloaded quickly... It'll tske several months (16 to be exact) to transmit all the images back.. The hi-res ones. We're discussing it in the space forum pics thread... Come on by, OP

Id like to know if this is true or not.
I thought Pluto was our farthest, since as of now we have explored our whole solar system ( at least checking out the planets )

There's other rocky large bodies outside of pluto, but we've passed the point of considering any of them to be planets. I believe it's estimated there are many rocky ice bodies the size of pluto or bigger, and I believe they've discovered some that they're still tracking/studying, but I can't remember that in detail to be honest.
"As part of the Voyager program, like its sister craft Voyager 2, the spacecraft is in an extended mission to locate and study the regions and boundaries of the outer heliosphere, and to begin exploring the interstellar medium. Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space on August 25, 2012, making it the first spacecraft to do so"
And it was this one that has the golden record on it. I had a borderline obsession with space for as long as I've had memories, and I've probably forgotten more about all of it then I currently know, but I still remember a lot of it
Pluto is "technically" the furthest body ever to be considered a planet, but the other 8 are located on the same plane in space while pluto is not, which is one of many reasons why it was removed as a planet, all other ice or rocky bodies found are also not located on that plane which is why they will most likely never be considered planets either.
"Since the 1990s, many other roughly Pluto-sized bodies have been discovered beyond Neptune, such as Eris, Huamea and Makemake, If Pluto had been discovered along with the others rather than 60 years earlier, there can be little doubt that no one would have called it a planet in the first place. There is nothing special about Pluto, other than the accident of having been the first to be discovered."

Beyond Pluto are Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea. Then there is the Oort Cloud surrounding everything that orbits our sun.

It was a capsule and it contains like all our basic knowledge and shit. It isn't equipped with anything else. We launched it out into out space and it's on a never ending trajectory because no gravity means no stopping. It probably honestly crashed into a star by now.

Yeah it would take 4 years traveling at 186000 miles per second roughly to reach the closest star, it's roughly traveling only 12-14 miles per second....it'll take it like 50000 years to reach the closest star.
Edit: I underexaggerated. "Actually, the answer is 4.2 years. Our nearest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 Light Years away. The Voyager spacecraft left the solar system at 37,000 miles per hour. At that speed, it would take Voyager 80,000 years to reach Proxima Centauri."
"The Space Shuttles weren’t starships. At a maximum speed of about 17,600 mph (about 28,300 kph), it would have taken a Space Shuttle about 165,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri."
186000 miles per second is roughly the speed of light, I can't remember the equation for it though.

I'm not interested in anything space related anymore unless it involves getting people to mars or the equivalent of something so amazing, I truly don't know why we ever stopped sending people to space. Real space, not the Space Station since it's only 250 miles away from earth.

Ann Druyan (wife of Carl Sagan) talks about compiling the items to be put on the gold record.
