Casing mixture too moist?
    #2193871 - 12/21/03 03:26 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was following the 60/40 tek and when I got to the part where you mix the vermiculite and the coco coir, I realized the mixture was far too wet. There was a collection of water at the bottom of the stirring bowl. I drained out a large portion of the water, then I proceeded with the tek. After microwaving the mixture it doesn't seem so bad. Is it OK to use?

By the way, I added the vermiculite almost directly after mixing the water with the coco coir. Am I supposed to wait for the coir to expand (does not say anything about waiting in the tek).

I also would like to know if you can fruit cakes and casings in the same chamber. I would assume you could. Do I have to let my casings incubate or can I put them in the fruiting chamber right away?

try squeezing the casing mix, only a few drops of water should come out, if a little more does, its still not that bad and it probably usable.

yes you can use the same chamber, however casings need less humidity.

you don't HAVE to incubate your casings before fruiting, but if you don't, it make take a long time for the casing layer to get fully colonized.

Thanks. I went through with the casing, let's hope it works out.

I have another question - my two casings barely fit into the fruiting chamber. When the two are in there, there is literally no open space. Would this pose a problem for the perlite? If the perlite is not exposed I'm guessing it can't really do its job...

perlite isn't really needed with casings as long as they are in a small closed container like a rubbermaid, because they provide their own humidity.
Perlite is a real mess too.
