Kinda freaking out... May have tasted Cortinarius rubellus?

Okay, I know what I did was stupid... so I thought these were gyms and tasted them, almost no flavor and certainly no bitterness, so I thought I tasted the wrong part or an old mushroom or something... So I bit off a few small chunks off different specimens and help it in my mouth... No bitterness. I spit everything out but didn't rinse my mouth out, should I be worried?!

How much did you taste first off. A small chunk shouldn't hurt especially if you spit it out.

If you spit and didn't swallow any there is no harm done.
...We're still talking about the Cortinarius, right?

Its perfectly safe to taste mushrooms, even deadly ones like Amanita phalloides (The Death Cap) as long as you do not actually eat them. Even then the amounts of toxins per specimens varies greatly enough that it may not kill someone.

As long as you spit it out and didn't swallow anything, including juices, you are fine.
I once heard a story of an expert in the field taste testing a deadly Galerina and just tasted a piece the size of a fingernail clipping which they accidentally swallowed. They later died the most horrible death imaginable from mushroom poisoning.

Please source that story if you want anyone to believe that. A tiny piece of a Galerina is not going to kill anyone, a whole specimen probably won't. Someone will probably need to eat several specimens before being adequately poisoned. Someone did not so long ago and they survived., a concerned family member or friend posted here asking for advice after the fact. There was another person Alan mentioned that intentionally ate a small piece of a deadly Amanita to show that it would not poison him, it didn't. I certainly would not suggest anyone try that as the toxins can vary a lot, I'm not sure if they would enough that a small piece will kill someone though. There is another story found on mushroomobserver where someone ate mushrooms from the same patch of deadly Amanita twice before actually getting sick and dying.

I agree, not something to bring up unless it's able to be proven to have happened. Sure it didn't make OP feel any better.

I would, but it's so old at this point that I wouldn't even know where to look, I'll try and dig it up, but I put my word on it being true. I'll try and find the story

If you can't find it that is fine, I wasn't trying to single you out, just that story sounds like a tall tale given our current understanding of mushroom toxicity.

I definitely understand where you are coming from, I'd want to see the story too. Thanks for keeping it real and asking for proof like that, I like to provide exacts. This is a hobby of exacts, not guesses or weird stories. This is a science, down to the specifics. So for now, until I find a copy of the story to post I'll call it null for now. When I find it, I'll be back.

Yeah, it seems like a lot, but if you average it over 17 years, it's only 7.8 posts per day.

That's more posting than I do. I spend a lot of time thumbing through recent posts and ID's. I also don't reply an awful lot cause there's some crazy people on this thread with a lot more knowledge and understanding of the universe and some are just retarded. Like in the PUB. Nice to meet yah.

Haha, yeah I got mad pics in there but its just 10% of my unique finds from a couple seasons, like 04, 05, 06, if you took all my finds that i didn't have a camera around to take pics of, it would fill up everyone on here's gallery almost.

The thing that's messing me up is the TI is gone.
Trusted Identifiers never had any flags. it used to be a list with ten names, of which i was 2nd. Then someone decided to take the names in Gumby's thread and assign them flags.
The very description when you view this forum in the index, this forum, I wrote it 12 years ago.
Here is the TI team when this was my old stomping grounds. Experienced people who can be trusted with mushroom identification are (this list will grow over time):
- Gumby - eris - ToxicMan - canid - Anno - georgeM - landsnorkler - falcon
IDK anyone else in that list other than ppl who I have met today.
Hunting is something that if you don't give it all you got, you feel like you didn't do your best and I end up avoiding it cause I couldn't answer every single ID like I used to. Back in the day every single ID had a reply by me in it. These days I lost my confidence due to years spacing out and not being into mushrooms. But I'm going back to my roots.

Nice man! Yeah, it takes a lot of interest in the hobby time and dedication to be able to Identify pictures of wild mushrooms. I'm good with actives. One thing about this.hobby is there's always more to learn! Oh and I trust yah, about the galerina story. I just didn't want to freak OP out anymore lol.
