Monotub top layer depth question
    #21937318 - 07/13/15 01:22 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

How thick of a moisture retaining top layer do you typically lay down over your mixed coir/verm/spawn in a 66qt tub?

I'm curious because I recently set up a new tub and I underestimated the amount of pasteurized coir/verm mix I reserved for the top protective layer.  Usually I lay it down around a half inch thick, but this time it was just barely enough to cover any exposed grains.
Normally I'm looking at a 10 day wait before things are ready to put into fruiting conditions, but at only 4 days in so far, this tub is looking about 50% of the way to completion before fruiting.  I'm guessing maybe 3 or 4 more days before fruiting.  2 days doesn't sound like a lot, but that's a 20% reduction in time, which is significant.

Long question short:  Is a thinner top layer to decrease time-to-fruiting OK as long as the tub is retaining proper humidity?

No more than 1/8 to a 1/4 inch.

Gracias!
So it would seem that what's been slowing/stalling my tubs has been the fact that I've been laying that top layer on about 3 times too heavy.

This most recent one is just ripping right along, and I'm not seeing anything unusual looking or wrong with it; just that it's expedited.

I've read posts of folks who recommend 1/2" and say it gives bigger fruits and more flushes.

The majority who recommend casing call for a thin 1/4" layer.  Field capacity, fluffy, just barely covering the sub.  Some recommend patching in a day or two to get an even pinset.

So you're demonstrating for yourself what works.  Cool

Both have worked for me.  Now it's just a matter of seeing if there's any difference in the fruiting stage.  Although, it's not going to be a "real" demonstration of much since I'm still working from multispore, and there's going to be significant variability anyhow.

Mostly, I'm glad to see that I didn't ruin anything by using such a thin top layer.  :-)

There shouldn't be any significant difference but with a thin layer it tends to have a little more patchy, less uniform look to it from the mycelium being denser near the grains just below the surface.
