Strange contaminant
    #21936452 - 07/13/15 08:57 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Found an oyster mushroom growing on a tree last week and tries to take a tissue sample and get it growing on an agar culture slant.  Checked this morning and it's got some kind of weird fruit bodies growing out of it.  No idea what this is...they are growing out of the oyster mushroom tissue, not the agar.

 oyster fruit bodies? They do look like it. Why isn't it colonizing the slant? I assume you followed everything, including leaving the lid loose for GE. Though I'm not sure why you'd put tissue onto a slant and not a dish for cleanup before a slant.

I was out of dishes, but had slants already made.  Just happened to stumble across the fruits growing from a tree, and wanted to try to get a culture going before they rotted.  The lids have been loose, wrapped with press - n seal for gas exchange.

I also thought they may be oyster fruits, but they are really small, maybe 2mm long.  I think it may be some sort of mycotroph, but no idea what.  I really wanted to get a culture from this, since it was growing local to my house.  Hopefully I can isolate the mycelium from whatever this is...

Here are some closer pics, under magnification this time.  They are definitely sporulating, as I can see the spores in the condensation droplets

Spores in the condensation...

It's a pin mold. My best guess is Rhizopus nigricans or something related. That's shitty. I'd recommend making multiple dishes for tissue samples next time. better luck next time

They just look like oyster pins in these newer pics.

Almost looks more like slime mold fruit bodies in those first ones or what pin mold fruit bodies look like magnified.
