Abort or just slow colonization?
    #21936358 - 07/13/15 08:18 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I've been trying to colonize 10 jars from the brf tek.
Although there are what I believe are little spots of Mycelium in the jars they don't seem to spreading at all.
I've had them in for a day shy of 2 weeks now and am starting to think I should give up on them and start anew.
I'm assuming they stopped colonizing from the high heat I subjected them to (put them in a car on a hot day).
But if this lack of growth is indicative of some other misstep I would truly like to know so that I don't repeat it.

Dunno what I'm looking at but if your jars show no growth after two weeks I'd start over, yeah.

PS: Please say that isn't tape across the top of your jar?

Greetings human.

A hot car is no place for cakes,, I've read that 85+ is harmful  to colonizing mycelium

I would start fresh aswell after two weeks of nothing

Do you happen to have a pressure cooker?

Yes that is micropore tape on-top, I saw RR recommend re-taping after inoculation, perhaps I misread?

I tried to make the pictures a bit more legible, the spots are difficult to see with the quality.

I think I screwed my jars by keeping them to warm aswell as other factors, treat them like infant babies steralise then cool knock em up and leave them above your fridge for at least 2 weeks before you look and try to not touch them.  I will be following my own advice as I didn't before haha

I just looked at 7 of my jars I knocked up on June 19 still no growth. They had some growth spots but stopped because I turned the heat on in the room they were in and it's summer, the jars were almost hot to the touch, no growth from then on. I've officially given up on the 7 jars and am steralizing them now so I can use them for my next project I have 24 jars ready to go now I can't wait. Good luck!

That's my dead jars. Look familiar?? Lol. And my healthy ones. they were all knocked up the same time just been kept in different conditions.

That tape is probably unnecessary as long as your not keeping the jars in a moldy bathroom or under a bed or something. I've stalled cakes by taping larger jars (with stupid non-permeable tape), taking the tape off boosted growth back to what it should be.  You might as well invest in a pressure cooker too. They're good for cooking rice and stuff as well as thoroughly sterilizing jars.

I'd take the tape off, so they get some more air exchange, and let them sit around for a couple more weeks. They might just be stalled and may have some growth in the center somewhere. There's no harm in waiting. The good news is that you don't seem to have any contams in the jars. You might as well start some new ones too.

@devon
That third pic looks like it's contaminated with some kind of mold.

I know those are my contammed jars I've got 3 steralizing now so I can dispose of them. That pic looks weird because there is a little myc but I've spun the jar so much the dry Verm layer keeps falling down so it looks weird. They smell really bad to.  Don't put jars in a hot ass room in sunlight and turn the heat on. Unless u want to grow mold. I'm f'in epic at that lol

Alienlifefoam...I'm new but have done a few PF grows...ditch the tape, the Vermiculite layer works as the filter... They need to breathe brother. If they were subjected to high temps, they might not start back growing, but as long as you don't smell anything bad or see contamination, leave them on a shelf...see what happens. I would start over if I were you. A pressure cooker and patience are the two most important things in this hobby.

OK....you are right...following the tek...is probably the most important...I guess I should have said..."This most important thing mycology has taught me is Patience "...but a pressure cooker doesn't hurt.

I wouldn't suggest anything over 30°c for colonization. All my grain jars left in a room where it was 30°c for about 9 hrs seem to have stalled. High temps favour bacteria over mycelium.
