Fruit fly larvae present on cake
    #21936194 - 07/13/15 07:03 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I have had issues with fruit flies from day one. The summer has invites them in. Despite the mini Holocaust occurring by the window outside my door, a few still get in. Early on, my light burned out, so I moved the sgfc to my open room instead of the closet. I have almost always found one or two chilling inside my chamber these days. I pursue them with thetintensity of Walter White. I finally moved back to my closet with a new light and things seemed to improve. Yesterday, a fly flew out of the terrarium, so I decided to give the cake a spot check. Much to my horror, I see three red egg looking things that I quickly removed from the underside surface. I thought on it more and I decided to risk picking up the cake for closed inspection. Three or four spots on the bottom look to contain fruit flu larvae. There are semi-transparent pockets where I can sort of see things inside and I noticed a maggot moving around when I sprayed it. Now the big question is, can I safely remove these without effecting my fruits, or should I toss it. I have one large cake that I used a spawn bag to create. The surface they are on has many holes/crevices as the mix I made came out clumpy for other reasons. I'm worried they got more inside that I cannot see. I apologize for any errors, I'm on my phone. Thank you.

I now realize I put gnat larvae in the title instead of fruit fly. My apologies.

Im not sure if the cakes can be saved (personally i would toss them after PCing) but i do know a helpful trick for trapping some.

Bars have a problem with them so they put an open bottle out on the bar half-full with simple sugar. To make simple sugar just boil 1 cup of water and add 1 cup of sugar. Mix well and let cool. Adding a small amount of fruit purée also helps a lot but is optional.

The flies get stuck in the bottle and drown.

Those bug zapping lights work good, weather stripping helps some, and hanging sticky traps can eliminate a few but all cost money

I had tried the apple cigar vinegar with soap inside the chamber as well as a fly strip in there. They always seem more interested in the cake. I've done my best to stem the tide at my door and have moved the grow into the closet like I did before. I removed what I thought looked like bad juju from the cake and I want to continue the grow, at least for a flush. If they look unsafe to consume at that time, I will toss everything.

Fly strip and get a spray called worry free. It's harmful to them but all good for mycelium, mushrooms, and us.

Fruit fly larva are too small to see. Sounds more like mushroom flies. Try dunking your cake for 24 hours. I don't think they can survive that.
