WBS is a pain in the *** for transfer jars
    #21935447 - 07/12/15 10:37 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Anything easier to use than WBS? I'm probably either going to inject the jars directly 1CC each, or continue to do Agar transfers...... that process took almost all day straining 30thousand times....... for 10 quarts dry (that ended up being about 15 jars 3/4 full, PC'd strained 3-4 times) I had leftover jars i could use, and a about another 1.5 amt of WBS..... I guess Rye is easier to use? I got a 40 lb bag of wbs for 20 bucks...  have a tiny sink strainer and not a lot of room to work with. I could really only do 5 quart jars in the PC at a time.... Suggestions?

Not sure what's going on here...?  What's the pain in the ass?

I use this strainer. It works perfectly for WBS.

If you use 'regular' pasta strainers WBS will get everywhere.  Did you say you strained the WBS AFTER you PC'd the jars?

Not sure why it would take that long.

For the rinsing part I like to take it outside and use a spray nozzle attached to a hose to get the pressure to really rinse it well in less time.

WBS is pretty easy once you get the hang of it but for the ease nowadays I opt for the rye even if it costs a tad bit more:shrug:

Basically i did thiS

24 hours in a bucket w water
Rinse [it was 10 quarts + so i did this 4 times ubtil it was all done]
Pressure cooker- used it as a pot, simmered until 5% burst
rinse another 4x
removed excess water via paper towels
Put it back in jars with proper lids
pc'd 6 quart jars 2 times and another 3 once. Took all day. Better method?

Well for one you don't need to rinse again after the simmer and which will help you a little time-wise by steam drying and then if needed you can get the last little bit of moisture with papertowels.

Also definitely no point it cooking your jars twice so that should cut quite a bit more time out as well.

Rinse THEN soak in hot tap water with 1 tbsp gypsum.
Then I boil the grains for 5-10 minutes.  I do this so the grains are hot and can be easily steam dried.  After just 5 minutes of shaking the recently boil grains in the colander they are almost completely dry on the surface.

When rinsing the grains after the simmer it makes it impossible to do the steam dry technique.

You should only have to PC the jars once for 90mins at 14-15psi.

You don't want to simmer WBS.

Just bring to a boil and strain. Load into jars and pressure cook.

No simmering wbs :takingnotes:
Thanks elasticaltiger... I've been wondering if I should start bringing it to a boil... Hard to get the last of the millet to colonize

Same here.  Does work amazing when incorporating sinks.  I got mine from Walmart years ago and it's surprisingly still doing its job.

I use rye. So my method stated above regarding boiling the grain would work with rye berries perfectly.
Give rye a shot.

I like stealing my window screen.  Huge surface area so I can lay the grains out in single layer and they steam dry super quick.

The problem i have here is that 15 jars is a pain in the ass to do this method. I have LIMITED SPACE. I have one strainer so every time i rinse them, at all, I have to do multiple loads and rinses and drains [3-4 EACH RINSE] which makes a decent mess.... I do rinse before soaking them, and i meant i did three loads of PC. not pressure cooking the same kind twice

So what i learned here is... boil the wbs, and the second it boils, strain it? I have a 32 quart PC and i dont have a strainer that can do 15 jars worth of wbs at once- im kind of looking for a different method here. It works so far, my jars are colonizing fine, but there has to be a more efficient way or grain so i dont have to keep dumping and draining

buy 2 strainers?

fooman has a great wbs prep if you need to do 3 pc runs on the go.
just grab the grain you need after 3-4 hrs or so and let the rest soak while you wait for the pc to finish.

read that

I use a bucket, my presto pc as a pot, and a diy strainer (see below)(upscale version from link). When the water boils I dump it in the bucket, with 1/4 cup gypsum then pour my wbs in (from the bag). Soak a half hour/hour then dump on the strainer. Fill the bucket up with hot water one time and slowly dump it over the wbs to rinse. Then spread evenly. Set timer for 15 minutes, then flip (wear gloves on metal screen) and load jars.

one half full presto lets me do like 20lbs wbs/bucket, and the screen holds 40lbs if you're in a hurry.....
