Regular vs. Square Stern Canoes

I'm trying to buy a canoe and my neighbour wants to sell me his. It was an 18' aluminum Freighter that he shortened to 15', but it's a flat back.
I'm going deep woods camping so I will not be using a motor; only paddles. My question is, does the flat back completely ruin the streamline and slow you down considerably compared to a regular rounded canoe? How much difference does the square stern make when only paddling?
Thanks.

That canoe sounds like all kinds of hassle. It was an 18' cut down to 15'. It would have to much width for the remaining length to paddle easily. Also, if you're going deep woods and will need to portage you do not want an aluminum canoe. Don't go flat back unless you are mounting a small outboard motor on it. Get a fiberglass, or even better carbon kevlar canoe if you can afford it. Look for good deals on used canoes (that aren't aluminum, cut down flat backs).

Theres a 14' fiberglass/kevlar on kijiji for $350 I was eyeing but I'm worried about size and weight. I somewhat offered my neighbor $250 and he sounds like he would go for it, and he told me he's had a moose in it before so there's no worries on the weight front for 3 people+gear.
I think you're right on the width part in cutting through the water though. It's not just a small flat back, it's wide. I think I'm going to have to pass on his.
14' seems small for 3 men though. But it's 60lbs compared to probably 80 for the aluminum and 20lbs doesn't sound like much until you end up on an 800m portage.

i got mine and three others for my friends for free. i live off the missouri, and with all the flooding we have over the years, a couple wash up every year. also a dozen or so kayaks.

Well wouldn't that be nice. Do you just walk along near the river during/after the flooding and loot, or do you live right along it?

i live right along it, we usually find them in the spring when it's morel season. just this year we've found bottles of perc's as well. we've made it a hobby to scavenge the flood debris. a few years ago we found a hot tub.

it seems like a smart man would find a use for all the flood water, could be profitable

I canoe a fair bit. Many years ago I used an old aluminum canoe. They are bomb proof. You can run them into rocks and put moose in them but they are a bitch to paddle and even worse to portage. That 20lbs you speak of is major when you are looking at doing portages. Now I paddle a 15' carbon kevlar that comes in at 43lbs and a 16'5" carbon kevlar that comes in around 50lbs. These canoes are great for portaging. Keep in mind that you will likely also have a 55-65lb pack to carry in addition to the canoe. That's why every pound makes a difference on portages greater than 1.5km. For three men plus gear, I would not recommend anything less than 16'. I always go on 3+ day trips and with the amount of gear there simply wouldn't be enough room for 3 guys.
