Did anybody not see this coming?
The world's formerly most powerful drug lord has "escaped" again, this time out of Mexico's allegedly highest maximum security prison. I use the word "escape" loosely though as there's no doubt he was walked & guided out by prison guards & officials, because we all know a 60 year old El Chapo ain't pulling off the sequel to The Shawshank Redemption.

Mexico is a seriously fucked up place. In some places people are collecting illegal weapons and organizing militias because they're sick of being butchered by the gangs and there's nobody to protect them. And all this is because we think drugs should be illegal. . That one's for us, but we deserve at least 5.

So has the USA.
El Chapo represents the biggest middle finger to the drug war that could exist. The man is a hero.

Is that really the middle finger that opponents of the drug war should want, though? The guy is responsible for a seemingly infinite number of deaths in his country. Without the war on drugs, El Chapo and the subsequent cartels would cease to exist.
And lets not get it twisted...he's not some heroic martyr for illegal drugs, lol. He sees it as pure profit and nothing else. He sees you, me, and any other consumer of drugs as a dollar sign.

That's part of the middle finger at the drug war. The drug war created this guy, his network, and his net worth. The irony of it is intertwined with the concept. I don't care if he sees people as dollar signs because his dollar signs = the pinnacle of the problem of the drug war.

He's not really so much a hero, as he is a ruthless & brutal drug lord, merely taking advantage of a situation.
If you want a hero in the drug war then ross ulbricht would be your guy. And he's doing life in prison for it. Mexican cartels, on the other hand, are often protected by the DEA / CIA, rather than persecuted.

Heroes are often ruthless and brutal against their enemies. Watch what Superman does to his foes; we just identify with what Superman wants so we don't see his ruthless and brutal actions against his nemesis as such. But his nemesis sees it that way; it's all about perspective. And heroes always take advantage of an advantageous situation. Ross Ulbricht is a hero as well for different reasons.

Ya...... Heroes generally don't kill whole villages in territory struggles with other "Heroes" (don't forget about the children he heroically had slaughtered. That's Superman 101). I know it's safe in yuppieville, where you live, but Mexicans are afraid of drugs because they're closely associated with mass murders and a multitude of other atrocities. You know how the Eskimos have a bunch of words for snow? In Mexico City they have lots of specific words for various kinds of mutilated corpses. Hippy protesters get chopped into pieces and buried in mass graves. The guys that superman beats up seem okay in comparison to El Chapo.
I'm getting the feeling that you don't grasp the scale of human suffering that this guy has caused. He's as much a supporter of the drug war as our government is. It's what makes him rich. You deluded if you think he's some kind of iconic symbol that stands against the war on drugs. He's a warlord. He makes drugs seem evil, and that's bad for the whole anti-prohibition movement. Here's your facepalm .

The last cartel story I heard about out of Mexico was some people getting cut apart with blowtorches. That paints a picture right there..

Yeah I agree. I also get abltsandwich's take on El Chapo being an unintentional middle finger of sorts to our country's drug war...but El Chapo himself is not a hero. He's not standing up for anybody but himself and his profit margin.
the guy would stick his own family members in a barrel of acid (and not the lysergic kind) if they got between him and his cash flow

You are forgetting that he can only do that because of the unjust war on drugs. You want us to attack the effect rather then the cause, you can stay mad at the wrong people if you want, the government also realizes these people are FOR the drug war because it keeps them powerful and rich, but they make too much money arresting people for what they choose to put in their body to take it as seriously as they should.
The reality is, whether it is El Chapo, or not, somebody would be doing what he is doing, because there is a demand and profit for it, the war on drugs is the only thing that gave these people ground to stand on, with out it, they wouldn't of had the power to do the things they did. Maybe calling him a hero is a stretch, but he is the ultimate go fuck yourself when it comes to the war on drugs.

He's a great example of what the war on drugs really does, but that doesn't make him a hero. I'd give him iconic villain, especially with all these comic-book-like escapes. Calling him a hero is like confusing Batman with The Joker.

Might not be a hero, but he is nothing more then a creation brought on by the war on drugs, because you can't stop people from doing what they want with their bodies, and when you try to, well this guy and history can show you what happens.

Holy shit. I just read the article. He puts The Joker to shame. He had people dig a mile long tunnel into the jail, and the tunnel had an adapted motorcycle in it that he rode to freedom. The Joker would be jealous. He's like the joker with batman's gadgets.
