Thought I'd share a pic of my first decent King Oyster grow. Grown on wheaten chaff (cause there was no straw available)supplemented with gypsum.

Where did you come across the wheat chaff?

Wheat chaff?
Is chaff more available at feed stores? Whats the difference? Sorry for the rookie questions

Chaff is the shell that protects the cereal grain. Probably heavily available now that it's harvest time. But I am interested where HE got his. Seed store, grain elevator near a railroad, farmers, feed store, Co-op etc etc...

I live in Qld Australia, they grow a lot of wheat here. The chaff I used, which is the first cut after harvesting the wheat so you get straw and leafy stuff and grains,it comes from South Australia which is about 2500kms away.It is steam cut and compactly squashed into 20kg bags.I do soak it in lime water for 18 hrs and added about 5% gypsum. I used straw all the time before but for little extra cost the chaff is so much easier to work with. Cost comparison - straw bales approx. 12kg =$10 /Bag of wheaten chaff 20kgs chopped, clean,no lumps of dirt etc $24. Thanks for looking at my pic.

That sounds awesome! I was going do some trays of sawdust with straw added for aeration but i might simply use chaff.
Thanks for the idea!
