Psilocybe Tampanensis
    #21931932 - 07/12/15 02:32 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I've been reading quite a bit about sclerotia the last few months so I decided to jump into the waters.

It's been about a month and colonization is a bit slow but seems pretty healthy.

Tyvek.  One 1/4" inoculation hole covered with rtv silicone, two 3/8" GE holes and a tyvek filter.  Should be plenty.

Yeah the detail is cooler with a close up camera than the eyeball.

My inoculation area is pretty dark and the mycelium has looked kinda grey but when I brought the jars out to photograph they look OK.  Relieved.

I'm not sure of the exact timing.  I was going to set and forget so I didn't label.

Here's another jar:

It's been a common theme to all my ms grows for months.  LC quite a bit better.

Tonight I set my HEPA air purifier horizontally on a countertop and opened the lid on a couple of these P. Tamp jars in the filtered air flow to see if the slow growth is due to poor GE.  I doubt it but I figured it was an interesting low risk experiment.

Here's a pic I took tonite of a third jar showing plenty of stones on the bottom.

I actually don't think this is too bad for a month.

That looks really good for a month.I did a ATL grow a while back and they took forever to produce decent stones.I let them sit for close to a year and boy were they potent

One month isn't too long. I had some galindoi in jars for 4 months. Not because they needed more time, but I got busy. They're fantastic BTW.

we are talking about full colonization, a jar that takes 1 month to fully colonize just says something isn't right, not talking about stones and stuff

A month isn't so bad for Tamps. They're slower than Cubensis.

Oh I've got plenty of projects   This is my first stone grow so I am very interested in observing the process.

Update:
All the jars are either fully colonized or 99%.  In contrast to the slow colonization rate the sclerotia production seems quite robust.

Those look quite differnt than some ALT#7 I've seen
The ALT Fully colonize and start stone within two weeks, first jar I checked had 160 grams of stones in it after 3 months
The very first pick doesn't look colonized on the bottom of the jar, looks like bacterial I've been fighting

The last several months I've been wondering why it has taken my jars so long to colonize, including the p. tampanensis.  The only thing that made any sense is that perhaps the USPS has changed their tyvek envelopes, which I use as filters in my jars.  Who knows?  Gotta start with a hypothesis to reach a conclusion.

So a few weeks ago I bought a bunch of synthetic filter discs.  I again used my HEPA air filter, placed on the counter on its side, as a sort of flow hood.  I removed the lids from the p. tamp jars, took out the tyvek filters and replaced with synthetic filter discs.

No contamination and everything's looking OK.

It's been almost 3 months.
I probably won't harvest until I'm ready to bioassay.
Guess I should calculate the BE, thanks for the reminder.
I'll open one jar and also attempt to fruit with the sub that remains after I pick out the stones.
Keep the remaining jars growing.

LOL One of the reasons I love this hobby is because of the all the different opinions and experiences.  Here's what an old timer told me recently:

Quote:

Trip is way different, its real nice clean very little visuals open and closed eye. But you can feel the strength of it in a super body feel that is nice. Couldn't even move on high doses, It kinda has a sleepy style dreamy visions. Wasn't really what I expected but a good one either way.

I recently had a level 3+ experience
on only 2g dried PE
so I know how widely experiences
can vary from person to person.
But the good news
for sclerotia growers
like me
is that I have yet to hear
of a bad trip on stones.
Perhaps because
of the type of person
who has the motivation
and patience to grow them.

The substrate seems to be shrinking significantly especially in this jar.  It started about 2/3 full and is now less than 1/2.

What is the longest time that any one here on the Shroomery have reported to have let stones stay in their jars?

I hear 6+ for really strong and mature stones, but has any one done a year, or 18 months, or would they simply dry out and stall at a certain point?

just curious, Thanks.

Here's a Shroomery post of stones grown for at least a year: Psilocybe mexicana / a one year old bag of stones

I didn't want to harvest these until I am able to bioassay but it seems obvious their time is now.

Not much but I'm still happy
I mixed the leftover colonized grains
with 1 qt coco coir/straw/coffee grounds sub

Yeah I could definitely kept these stones going for a while longer.
Bit of a false alarm, lesson learned.
However I'd planned to open it soon so no problemo.
Still have two more jars cranking

Wow I have to say I'm now a total scloretia convert!
The trip is quite visual without being overwhelming
I feel the mushroom's presence
but it is even more comforting than usual, quite familiar.
No psychodrama crap, revisiting my childhood etc. Bleh.
An energetic high, positive vibes
as though the mushroom was thanking me
for my grow efforts
Positive vibes, hope for the future
Clean, no body load.  Just scintillating evanescence LOL
I'm not big on trip reports but I can say that
I HIGHLY recommend you grow and commune with my friend
P. Tampanensis a.k.a. philosophers' stones.

I ignored my tub for a few days but the 2nd flush is pretty good, as far as P. Tampanensis fruits go.

Some of the mushrooms were quite thick and relatively heavy and some grew to 10".

Also noticed quite a bit of blueing, which didn't happen on the first flush.

I'd just misted heavily before I took this pic which is why there are so many water droplets.

A bit of detail on some of the more interesting looking fruits.
