I love contamination!
    #21930565 - 07/11/15 07:53 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

So I just finally realized after several weeks that I had been cultivating cobweb mold in my grain jars and gtging it. I've never experienced cobweb personally and now realize that it does look strikingly similar to mycelium except it's much fluffier and wispy. It almost looked like cotton balls on top of my grains and for the longest time I thought something was off but wasn't sure. I figured maybe it was really "tomentose."

I went to take a whiff of one of my fluffy jars and it smelled almost like dirty gasoline in a way. Then I go to smell one of my successful jars and it smelled like fresh mushies just like my pf cakes did.

I really enjoyed my first mini bulk project but damn, it feels like it's going to be my only bulk project for the year! It's frustrating but I'm thankful for the first hand experience because it's making it easier to identify what issues I have. I feel like chucking all of my agar plates in rage and starting from the bottom lol. What a waste of birdseed.

Should I be worried about cobweb mold spores floating all around my home and sticking to everything like trich? I just dumped the jars and have them soaking now before I wash them out.

I just had to vent. Thanks for reading :aweshit:

Cobweb is tricky but now you know. In my experience cobweb hasn't been epidemic but I don't know how your contaminatiom compares to my own in scale.

I think your okay just clean thoroughly and keep sterile next time.

That makes me feel better. I feel all super paranoid about my air quality now. I think I may have accidentally picked it up on my agar. It's just that baby mycelium and cobweb look so much alike. Maybe I should do more transfers before inoculating my spawn. :themoreyouknow:

Hopefully someone else will chime in but like I said I've seen cobweb a couple times without having a whole string of contams in between.

Cobweb smells like a moldy wet basement to me, nasty and its very fluffy, spider web like and grey ime.  Have not seen it in years thank god . This and black pin mold freaks me out for some reason

Against the wbs the cobweb was almost see through. There were portions that were super white and fluffy and then portions that weren't. I guess the off white look should have been a hint.

I just chucked out my first normal size mono a few days ago because of trich. Now I know what trich looks like before and after it sporulates. I searched up that black pin mold and that looks like something laid a bunch of eggs on the mycelium. I hope to god never to see that. I never really understood how disgusting this world was until I got into mycology
