For your information, asbestos has been found in vermiculite-containing garden products and some talc-containing crayons.Just do a search for vermiculite on the following page: http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/asbestos/asbestos-fact-sheet

Yeah I'm a mechanic and brakes still are made with asbestos. That's why you always wash brakes with water and brake clean over what they used to do was hit it with air. Anyways, those guys are still around. They used to spray the brakes with compressed air every day too. Asbestos wouldn't be a problem unless you're breathing it in though. Not like mushrooms will absorb the asbestos like that.
Still though, mushrooms can still absorb poisons like cyanide. It's Impossible to absorb asbestos and ingest it though. So it's probably better to keep as many poisons out. I don't even use verm anyways lol.

Many years ago now, one vermiculite operation was contaminated with asbestos. Once discovered, it was shut down. No new vermiculite contains any asbestos! Sure, if you have an old building, with vermiculite insulation, that's fucked. Get it professionally decontaminated, and do not use it to grow mushrooms.

I'm pretty sure asbestos wouldn't effect mushrooms. It's worse to breath in the particles. Besides it's a mineral, not a poison/chemical. Mushrooms wouldn't have it absorbed into the fruit bodies.

asbestos is 100% safe as long as you don't break it apart get the small particles airborne and breathe them in. mushrooms can absorb some minerals sure, but even if asbestos was absorbed up by mushrooms it would be rendered completely harmless since it is only harmful because of the shape of the fragments of the mineral being airborne
it's basically the same shit as play sand except play sand doesn't get airborne and have a inherent shape that slays the tissue in your lungs.
