How Far We've Come Since Oss and Oeric-Updated pix!
    #21929248 - 07/11/15 03:12 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

As many (if not all) of you know, the McKenna brothers co-authored a book entitled "Psilocybin:  Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide", subtitled "A Handbook for Psilocybin Enthusiasts" under the pseudonyms of Oss and Oeric.  So, I obtained a copy for my psychedelic library, and read it.  What a hoot!  It's amazing how far we've come.  For shits and giggles, I was thinking of doing a bottle grow as in their instructions.  For those of you not familiar, here's a pic straight out of the book that says a thousand words:

What do you think?  Would folks here like to see this fully colonized jar of grain turned into a McKenna-style grow for historical value and as a tribute to the McKennas?

N.B.

This was just cased wheat in a bottle that I didn't trust to spawn. Pretty much classic Oss and Oeric

But MudaFuka's bulk bottles are an awesome bump to that

You should totally fruit that jar of grains

Not a huge fan of McKenna myself, but do with your spawn as you will. Like Frosted Flakes said, just throw some casing on top and rock and roll

Awesome pix!  Now that I see those, I'm torn.  On the one hand it is way cool and historic.  OTOH, now that I'm aware that it's not as rarely done as I'd imagined...what's the point in ME doing it?  I was looking to do something novel, and I though jar culture would be cool as a "throw back".  But if folks are still doing it commonly...my enthusiasm is tempered.

Do love those pix, though!

Well the ones I posted were a mix of grains and bulk sub material so there is more water. The results are typically better than jst casing grain. Tho i must say Frosted Flakes cased grain jars are pretty sexy :derfase:

please NB, do it. I was very excited at first and after seeing everyone else's, I still am. I want to see YOUR version of the McKenna bros style.

Do it exactly as they did in the book.

NB + McKenna bros= classic shroomery pic to throw in the vault.

please continue the original idea.

Still one of my favorites.

@ Eklasticaltiger:  NICE!  :congrats:

OK, Bill.  I will.  I'll pasteurize some Miracle Grow Moisture Control soil later this morning.  Will take pix of the results.  BTW...I knocked up the jar on July 26, 2015 from a spore print made back in March of 2013.  Strain is Argentinian.  The actual instructions in the book call for sterilization of the casing material...don't think that's wise, though...

Here's the quote, directly from the book:

"When one or more jars have been completely permeated by mycelium, one can move on to the fourth step in the process that leads directly to the production of mushrooms. In commercial mushroom culture, this step is called casing. In the method outlined here, casing consists of removing the dome and band lid of the jar, and covering the surface of the permeated rye with about ½ to ¾ in. (½ cup for quart jars) of sterilized soil (fig. 40 & 41). The soil should be premoistened to field capacity before being applied. The fastest way to do this is to spread the soil on a clean sheet of plastic and spray it lightly with the spray nozzle of a garden hose. Mix thoroughly. Field capacity can be gauged by the following rule of thumb: spray the casing soil just enough so that the soil is moistened throughout, but no water passes through the soil into the mycelium. In other words, moisten thoroughly, but do not saturate the soil. If the soil is to be sterilized, it should be moistened first. After sterilization, it can be conveniently stored in a double layer of plastic garbage bags, after it has cooled. Small amounts of casing soil may be dampened by putting two or three liters of casing soil in a large mixing bowl and moistening it with a pump sprayer. A large wooden spoon is perfect for folding the wet layers of soil into the dry. Alternate spraying the soil and stirring the dampness throughout the mix. When the casing soil has uniformly darkened in color and retains a shape when squeezed, it is ready to use. Once in the jar the soil should be shaken level and wetted a bit more with a fine mist sprayer (fig. 42 & 43). A fine-mist spray must be used to avoid sealing the surface of the casing soil.
After applying and moistening the casing soil, discard the lids and maintain the cultures in a high humidity environment. A large styrofoam cooler with a window cut into the lid and covered with clear or translucent polyethylene is excellent for this (fig. 17-20), so is a glass aquarium. If maintaining the jars in aquaria or styrofoam boxes, it is important to pay attention to proper aeration. Experience has shown that the daily transpiration/evaporation cycle is important if one is to have vigorous fruiting, healthy cultures. Maintaining the proper moisture balance and evaporation rate in the casing soil is actually a complex interplay among temperature, aeration, and evaporation. If either temperature or aeration is excessive, the soil will dry out. On the other hand, it should not become waterlogged, and a minimal amount of air movement should be present to facilitate a slow, even rate of evaporation from the casing soil."

Looks like they wrapped the jars in aluminum foil.  This book is so classic!  Glad to have acquired a copy.

Here's my first 1970's style "bottle culture."  Kinda cool.  Once you've done all the standard cultivation tasks (PF, SGFC, Monotub and Mini-tubs) this is what was left to do to keep interests up.  :super:

I figure it'll be 8/5 or so before the shrooms are poking above the level of the lid for the final pix.
