Bovista Plumbea Puffball? Rocky Mountains. Want to make sure it's not a young amanita!
    #21928963 - 07/11/15 01:49 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Pretty sure I found a nice, young Bovista Plumbea puffball while walking the dog this morning.

Habitat - High Rocky Mountains on flat valley floor.  9000' elevation.  Found on a grassy trail along a dam of a pond in a wetland area.  The actual spot itself is high enough that it's not in the wetlands, but the area is surrounded by wetlands and tall grass and a river about 30 yards away.

Measure 2 inches across and is 2 inches tall.

Provided are pictures of the cross section and of the whole (hopefully!) puffball.

This is my first ID in the Rocky Mountains and I just want to make sure that I don't have a young amanita.

Thanks ahead of time!

I hope it is what I think it is because it smells delicious and I want to put it in my belly!

I am not sure what kind of puffball it is, but it looks edible.  Could be Bovista.

Ok, my main concern was that it was a very young amanita.

Can you confirm for sure that it's at least not an amanita?

If it's not an amanita, then I'm sure it's edible.

Will make a nice appetizer tonight, I'm thinking.

It is definitely not an Amanita.

You don't even have deadly Amanitas at 9000 feet elevation.  Species diversity goes down as elevation increases.

Well unless you exclude the Muscaria, but that's not deadly like you mentioned... just poisonous in it's own special way.  Those things grow everywhere around here usually starting in about 2 weeks from now.

That's certainly good to know about there not being any deadly amanitas at this elevation!  Thanks for the info and the help.

I wish I could find an experienced mushroom hunter up here because I'm always too scared to consume anything I find.  I just need a mentor to show me the ropes in order to gain confidence.  You'd think after 10 years I would have found someone into mushroom foraging....

I've got 3 or 4 Rocky Mountain field guides but just don't feel comfortable enough to put my faith and possibly risk my health on books with just a few pictures.

With how wet it has been this spring/summer, this mushroom season is going to be bonkers.
