How to avoid side pins with muda-style bottles

As for using it to test out cultures or to get prints as fast as possible, fruiting straight from the jar is one of the best options we have.
however side pins seems to come up every now and then. i had PE and APE bottle fruiting nicely only on top but saw terrible side grows too
any insights into the topic? let it consolidate? introduce fruiting condition as soon as it hits 100%, case or not to case
please chime in

I always have this problem where the pins always grow from the side only thing I can put it down to is the humidity factor being better on the sides. But I usually get pins on top of my cakes but they always start on the side. I mean SWIM haha

I don't see why side pins are such an issue to be honest. They're difficult to prevent, but why you need to prevent them is beyond me. If they only come up every now and then just let em grow right? If you really need to prevent them though, dust up the sides with Dansand or something along those lines, it'll give you conditions in those areas that might prevent side pins from forming, just an idea.

Ah, well if you're using untapered jars, I still stand by the suggestion: once the substrate has fully colonized pull the "cake" slightly out of the jar so there's an air gap between it and the side of the jar, and pour some (not too fine) sand in, it'll fill some gaps in the sub and make that area much less hospitable to fruiting. Sand won't ruin your jars, and it's pretty cheap.

Roseoftorn said to have almost eliminate those side pins by making black sleeves, he put the jar in before fruiting like a liner but outside the jar but it just prevent light and dont stick to the substrate... dunno how it could really work but i know u know him on another forum so you should ask him
