Really depends on the spider you're talking about, but in general, once you scale it up, you're looking at speeds of hundreds of mph. Then there's also the problem of muscle power to contend with. To run faster you have to push harder, to push harder you need more muscle. Which adds overall weight and then we need more power just to compensate for the extra weight.
For the record I had wondered if cockroaches human sized would still be able to run proportionally as fast as there smaller brethren. Turns out, no they couldn't physiologically.

btw u ever hear the native american story about the fearless warrior?
if not, gather around the fire kids
there was once a very brave warrior who wasnt scared of anything
he'd be all cocky about it too,
legend has it, some ghosts found out about this warrior and decided to give him a scare, "fearless warrior my ass" they'd say
well one day while the fearless warrior was walking alone the ghosts decided to surprise him
"behold!, i am ghost" one ghost said
but the fearless warrior was unimpressed
*yawn* went the fearless warrior and he started toying with the ghost
"hey give me back my head the ghost would tell the warrior"
well like three ghosts tried to scare him and none were successful
even to the point where the young warrior arrived at his village on a ghost horse he had stolen from one of the ghost themselves, scaring everyone in the village
well when he arrived to his village everyone was exited to hear his story
but while he was sitting down and telling this story to his comrades, a small spider decided to crawl on the brave young warrior, and when the warrior noticed the small spider he jump straight from the ground and screamed like a little bitch
the end
moral of the story, tl;dr
everyone is scared of something

tarantulas are hella slow.
i would imagine as a creature gets larger it gets slower
it really depends on the circumstances that allowed it to get big
like what it eats what tries yto eat it i mean elephants are big as fuck but they can be fast as fuck
raised in an envoiornment that tries to kill them, and migrate arounds n shit= more musculkar and fit= faster
what in the world is hunting gaint spiders? they eat birds.
lizards and fish maybe?
less stress on the species = moves slower

I'm afraid of cockroaches
Not like "I don't like them or I hope it doesn't crawl on me" I mean like "scream like a little bitch when one runs in my direction". I'll run out of the room, heart pounding like leather face is chasing me with a chainsaw, slam the door and then I won't stop looking at the floor and walls for the next hour. I won't leave my sanctum unless it is absolutely nessecary and even then, I creep around like one would in a horror movie trying to escape the unfamiliar and seemingly endless house. Every step is taken with great trepidation as I scan the floor, walls and ceilings for anything that even slightly resembles a roach.
I have a severe phobia of them because of a stupid fucking nightmare I had when I was about 5 or 6. I even kept the fucking things as "pets" and HELD them before the nightmare... After I was absolutely terrified of them.
Do you know how pathetic it is a nearly 30 year old man has to get his wife to go kill a fucking roach..

Spiders are my job, I'm not the least bit afraid of them. I'll smash them with an object if it's handy, my only aversion to doing it with my bare hands is I don't want bug juice on me. But I just had to smash one with my hand the other day. Spiders are to my wife what roaches are to me. We have a nice little trade off.

The only way for spiders to be human-sized is in your imagination, or the movies. So they can run however fast you think they would because it's impossible for them to survive at that size. My guess is they would collapse under their own weight and the suffocate from inability to absorb enough oxygen

Gravity actually *IS* the reason why bugs are small and why animals have limited sizes they can reach on land and water. Its the reason why we can have massive animals like blue whales in the ocean, but nothing anywhere close to that on land.
Insects biology pretty much limits them to being small.
In addition the the gravity, the amount of oxygen and other gasses in the air, but mostly oxygen, is also a major limiting factor.
There was a nature show all about it, well, mostly about this subject and a few others relating that David Attenbourough hosted and narrated. ErgI cannot remember the name of it off the top of my head but if I remember I'll post it.
There is also mention of this same subject in an insect specific show he also hosted.

There was also a show on Animal Planet called "The Most Extreme" that went over the limitations for insects and other organisms with exoskeletons that made it on its countdowns. I don't think David Attenborough narrated any episodes, but I may be wrong.

I thought the whole thought experiment was if they functioned exactly as is but scaled up to our size. So completely ridiculous and a world I'm glad i do not live in.

Not the show I'm talking about but I've seen that one. They play it a lot in the early early mornings before I go to bed after work. ( work graveyard)
Attenbourough definately has never narrated that one.

Well they would cover more ground, though they may be less agile.
Honestly, if arachnids were the size of people I would off myself in a heartbeat. I cleaned out my basement last month after letting some stuff sit for the winter/spring, and holy shit, it was covered in spiders .
Could. not. deal.
But before the dinosaurs(I forget the official name for the era), giant insects roamed the earth because the atmosphere was pretty much bloated with oxygen compared to now(or any other time).

I agree. I have a theory that when god designed spiders, he literally targeted what would be mankinds biggest fear. Like they are the gold standard for fictional monsters and all things horrible. You can't believe how scared i was to open this thread(i almost never open a thread with spiders in the title) out of fear of seeing one. If i ever open a page on my phone and a spider appears, i literally get paralyzed in fear and can't move until my battery dies.
I really appreciate the shroomery for not having spiders on this thread 5 shrooms for all of you.

Oh my fuck.
I just saw a centipede IN MY BED. This area has them this time of year, and normally they're in my basement and I don't mind them because they eat other insect but..IN MY BED.
that should NOT happen. I have so much work to get done today in terms of school and work(Sunday). I was going to sleep for a couple of hours and then start cranking, but now it crawled all over me and I ended up throwing my pillows across my bedroom and now I'm sitting on my living room couch. So I'll probably just keep drinking and just start now I guess.
And then by tomorrow night I'll be so tired I won't give two shits.

More seriously, the goliath birdeater can actually move pretty fast. So I imagine that human sized spiders could still move fast. Also, there was a time in earth's history when insects ruled the earth. So it's possible that people sized spiders really happened at some point.

More seriously, I'm glad I don't live in an area where I have to worry about bird eating SPIDERS. Or flying cockroaches or scorpians, or tarantulas, or tarantula wasps. The only thing really scary we get here are massive(albeit harmless) wolf spiders, that I've run screaming from a few times in my life, and maybe the occasional widow species in dark corners - and woodland rattlesnakes when you start getting out towards the boondocks, but oddly enough, I'd much rather encounter those than the teeny tiny little house centipede I just did.
It doesn't make sense to me. I don't mind moths, butterflies, ladybugs, but literally everything else(especially stinkbugs), I cannot deal with. Can't even squish them. It's pathetic.

Don't worry, it wouldn't work. The spider would suffocate. They don't have lungs like we do. They rely on passive gas exchange rather than forcefully inhaling and exhaling air. It's simple math. As things get bigger there is less surface area to volume ratio. Animals that breathe like spiders are small so there is lots of surface area to have holes allowing for gas exchange. But when you get bigger, you need totally different organs to allow for enough gas exchange to stay alive. That's the short version. Insects and spiders don't breathe like mammals, birds and reptiles.

FYCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK. i scrolled up and saw i missed one.
....you're right.
I can fix that!!!

Thanx for putting the spoiler bars, no way in fuck am i clicking it. Even if its scientifically the worlds best tits begind there, its not worth it to see them since im 99% sure its spiders. Fuck you.

The limiting factor for the size of animals with exoskeletons is oxygen concentration of the atmosphere. Since Arachnids and insects must breathe through their exoskeletons, the amount of surface area per volume decreases as the animal gets larger. Fact is, when oxygen levels were higher in the past, insects and Arachnids were much larger.

Don't many arachnids use book lungs? Rather than ambient siphoning more akin to insects?
There are 40+ lb crabs using book lungs and exoskeletons, very similar :3

Giant insects might reign if only there was more oxygen in the air
Quote:
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (October 11, 2006) - The delicate lady bug in your garden could be frighteningly large if only there was a greater concentration of oxygen in the air, a new study concludes. The study adds support to the theory that some insects were much larger during the late Paleozoic period because they had a much richer oxygen supply, said the study's lead author Alexander Kaiser.
The study, "No giants today: tracheal oxygen supply to the legs limits beetle size,'' will be presented Oct. 10 and 11 at Comparative Physiology 2006: Integrating Diversity. The conference will be held Oct. 8-11 in Virginia Beach. The research was carried out by Alexander Kaiser and Michael C. Quinlan of Midwestern University, Glendale, Arizona; J. Jake Socha and Wah-Keat Lee, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL; and Jaco Klok and Jon F. Harrison, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ. Harrison is the principal investigator.
The Paleozoic period, about 300 million years ago, was a time of huge and abundant plant life and rather large insects -- dragonflies had two-and-a-half-foot wing spans, for example. The air's oxygen content was 35% during this period, compared to the 21% we breathe now, Kaiser said. Researchers have speculated that the higher oxygen concentration allowed insects to grow much bigger.

That wasn't about what limits insects from getting larger. Was about why they wouldn't be able to run at proportionally high speeds if they were larger.
I know why bugs aren't big anymore and I know how big they used to be.

Oh yeah. They wouldn't be able to run at proportionately high speeds. At some point, to do so would require accelerating their limbs to the point where they would snap off.
