Should I be worried about this spot on my cacti?
    #21925913 - 07/10/15 07:59 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hello everyone.

When I first received this plant about 3-4 weeks ago, I noticed this area at the base of the button near the root was a little soft. It is slightly brown, and is definitely softer than the rest of the cacti.
It is only on one side of the cactus, and it hasn't gotten any bigger since I've had it.
I didn't think much about it at first, but the more research I have done, the more paranoid about rot I have become.

So I am just wondering if I should be worried? Should I attempt to try to cut this area away, or do you think it will it heal up naturally?

One Week Update

I am still monitoring this spot on my cacti. I managed to get a picture where you can see the spot I am concerned about a little better. It almost seems slightly 'saggier' to me today, but maybe I am just being paranoid.

This is the spot I am concerned about, the picture I posted in the original post the problem area was a little to far to the side to see well.

Here are a few pictures of the other sides of the cacti.

I wouldn't worry for now and I would continue to monitor its progress. If it gets worse then you may consider further action. Most spots, dots and bumps sort themselves out on their own and heal up leaving a scar. As a precaution you could limit watering, which should help heal the damage. It could be a bruise from when it was shipped to you.

Cool. Thanks for the advice.

How long is it okay to hold the water, generally?

Would it be alright with no water for two months you think?

They can go 2 months without water easily but waiting that long is a bit extreme in my opinion. I'd give it a few weeks to a month without water. If it looks thirsty, as in it shrinks, then give it a small watering.

Okay, thanks guys. I only ask because in two weeks I will be leaving for a month so I won't be able to water during that period of time.

I think before I leave I will give it a very light watering. Then it won't be watered for a month or so.

Yea, let the substrate absorb the water. Let all the excess drain out. You will be good for the month. It might be dry looking and a little shriveled, but itll be all good.

The white stuff is diatomaceous earth I am using as pest preventative that blows off one of my other plants by the way.
