i forgot all about it and i discovered it about a month later and opened it up..

covered in purple spores...the stems the caps everything...i washed them off in the sink and they are drying now. i bet they are not potent at all because they grew so big and left their spores all over the damn place but oh well..
i think im going to tie all my spent substrate in a plastic bag and see what happens

What does them growing big and dropping spores have to do with their potency?

well I read from a decent amount of people on here that when you let them grow to maximum size to the point the spores drop then it could decrease the potency.
I never knew how accurate it was but I accepted it as a pretty much fact.
im not saying they are completely bunk but I wouldn't be surprised if they would be more potent if I had got to them as veil started to break.
but whatever..
oh man was that a messy experience. my hands were completely purple
I really am going to put all my spent substrates in plastic bags like that one. I know it sounds silly but I can get a lot more mushrooms that way

Yea the golden time to pick your mushrooms potency wise is when the veil breaks, by time the spores drop it's past it's prime so to speak. I read that on here somewhere.
And damn I'm going to have to try this bag method before I try an outdoor patch.

After the veil tears the mushroom stops producing actives and only starts gaining water weight. That's why the potency is "decreased".

That hasn't really ever been proven.

Proof or a paper to back that statement?

There is absolutely no reason to believe mushrooms are less potent after dropping spores.
However, the spores taste awful so picking before the veil breaks is advisable.
I believe it was PF who originally started the whole "more potent" thing, but I don't believe it has ever been proven.
