This carl jung book is blowing my mind: should interest anyone interested in psychdedelics * 2
    #21924390 - 07/10/15 01:12 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

I can't recommend it highly enough, and I'm only halfway through it. A lot of it is about dreams and the subconscious. (jung calls it the unconscious though) He makes dreams seem like an incredibly important part of our psyche, and also gives you useful information on how to interpret your dreams.

He also uses his knowledge of dream symbolism to make sense of ancient mythology, ancient symbols, fairy tales, and other seemingly nonsensical parts of our culture. This aspect I found particularly interesting, as it seems that ancient man knew more about his mind than we do today

After reading this I'm definitely quitting weed. I want to dream again :vibin:

First book in a long time that I've actually had trouble putting down. Its only six bucks people. :discorex:

Dude, I only pay about 50 cents for books these days. Digital copies (unauthorized copies) that I read on an e-reader. Anything beyond 50 cents will start to put a hole in your wallet rather quickly. And I can get most books like this.

Yeah I enjoy cheating the system this way too. Not very fond of reading books on a laptop though.

Why pay 50 cents when you can torrent it?

Oh my god, because you can't torrent it. I'm a member of a crowdfunding piracy website. You can't just expect a website to have a great selection without that website being funded somehow. The website I use has a phenomenal selection and they used to promptly fulfill requests (i.e. you would request a book that was available in digital form on Amazon and they would simply buy it and you could then buy it for 50 cents). They had to tone down the requests thing... But I got like like 17 requests fulfilled, including a book that was like 60 dollars (which I only paid like 3 dollars for).

Um, a regular computer, yeah, but not an e-reader (which I posted a picture of above). E-readers are more convenient to hold because they don't have the gatefold design of books and you can change the text size and you can easily take tons of books with you anywhere you go and never worry about losing them as you can back them up.

Also, you can print digital books out. Because they're cracked copies of the books so you can make as many copies as you want or print the whole damn thing out. So yeah...

i'd rather just buy a nicely done book from a publisher. why would i want some photocopy paper bound text-y font piece of shit book, when i can get  one professionally made.

and i like reading between two pages, and flipping the page, and being able to go back and forth between sections. it's easier to put a bookmark in a book, than fumble with button's and selection's and then having to scroll through menu's and having to scroll from one page to the next down, and have the jumbled type set.

just look at the picture. the type set is blatantly scattershot which makes not only for a more lackadaisical reading focus, but also the lettering just looks awful on the "page".

this is the biggest plus for e-readers IMO: The fact that you can change the font size.

yeah, i'm not talking about the font, genius. i'm talking about the lettering and type set. whether you can change the size or not, the font or not, it's always going to be jumbled mess because it isn't done to exact specifications; it's just text, it's not a nice type face either cause internet type looks shitty on the page. not to mention you have to do all the adjusting yourself.

it doesn't look as good, it's not as readable, and it's a single page per page endeavor. plus it's just nicer to have a proper bound book with nice paper, proper lettering, ect ect, things that make it a much more readable and intimate experience.

I'd be interested to get a pared-down laptop with an e-ink display if there was such a thing. The slow refresh rate would limit its utility a lot but the battery life would be killer.

Not practical for a lot of people. Do you at least respect the e-reader method for technical books? Like someone in college who loads up his studying materials on it? And you know what? The note taking features of e-readers is far superior to traditional post-it notes. That's one of the best features of digital books. Highly useful for studying. Well I'm not saying that a person wouldn't prefer a physical textbook and post-it notes, but the ability to just stream through a book, digitally tagging things that you need to refer to later is much faster than post-it notes. And you can perform such a task while lying down; can't do that when working with post-it notes.

If you get a chance, read some Herman Hesse (Steppenwolf (trippy), Demian (well rounded), Siddhartha, Glass Bead Game (kinda slow) etc. etc.) He writes narratives about some fairly compelling characters based on himself (and one about Siddhartha), but they are all very thought provoking.

He shared a lot of ideas with and respected Jung quite a bit and it reflects in his style and content of writing.  They had similar upbringings too, Both being Jews from Germany when shit started going down. And both having had a huge appreciation for Buddhism and Eastern philosophy.

I absolutely adore siddhartha. Must've read that book 3-4 times last year.

Had never thought to check out Hesse's other work, thanks

hmm i have quite an active dream life which is quite an understament, always have and weed was the only thing that sometimes dulled this as it's known to

i record them now and then and can see some dreams have specific meaning to things, usually things i have not dealt with in my life, perhaps dealing with them will stop some of these dreams that have recurrent themes with people i used to see

i might give this a read

I have that book.  I wouldn't call it a Carl Jung book.  He only wrote one chapter in  it.  The rest of it is other authors interpreting some of Carl Jung's more heady subject matter.  Right now I'm reading The Basic Writings of Carl Jung.  It's a seriously hard fucking read.

Carl Jung was not Jewish.  In fact, his philosophies are popular in white supremacist circles.

You're right, I was mixing Freud in there. Neato re: supremacy stuff! Nevertheless, run a basic search of Jung and Hesse and you'll see countless reports and articles on the similar ideas esp regarding archetypal symbolism.

:discorex:

I have that book.  I wouldn't call it a Carl Jung book.  He only wrote one chapter in  it.  The rest of it is other authors interpreting some of Carl Jung's more heady subject matter.  Right now I'm reading The Basic Writings of Carl Jung.  It's a seriously hard fucking read.

Carl Jung was not Jewish.  In fact, his philosophies are popular in white supremacist circles.

yeah, its deceiving because his name is the only one listed on the cover. The other authors have seemed about as good as jung, based on jungs first chapter at least.

His other stuff is that tough eh? Something to build up to I suppose. I adore his way of thinking so far.

Too bad this was his only book geared towards laymen

the red book sounded really interesting, but it appeared to be one of his more difficult works from what I saw. I mean, there's a whole book about "how to read the red book"

I know.

It stands out as being one of those most bizarre books of all time.  Some people say its nonsense, others compare it to the book of the dead.

Carl Jung as you know really was ahead of his time and extremely brilliant, he's interested me for sometime and I keep coming back to him when I discover something else of interest.

Quote:

The first words of Carl Gustav Jung's Red Book are "The way of what is to come."

What follows is 16 years of the psychoanalyst's dive into the unconscious mind, a challenge to what he considered Sigmund Frued's — his former mentor's — isolated world view. Far from a simple narrative, the Red Book is Jung's voyage of discovery into his deepest self.

The Red Book
By C.G. Jung
Hardcover, 404 pages
W.W. Norton & Co.
List Price: $195

Read An Excerpt

The voyage began at age 11. "On my way to school," Jung recalled in 1959, "I stepped out of a mist and I knew I am. I am what I am. And then I thought, 'But what have I been before?' And then I found that I had been in a mist, not knowing to differentiate myself from things; I was just one thing among many things."

Thirty years later, Jung had a bookbinder make an enormous volume covered in red leather into which he poured his explorations into himself. These explorations included some psychedelic drawings of mythical characters of his dreams and waking fantasies — explorations that Jung feared would make people think him mad.

It took Jungian scholar Dr. Sonu Shamdasani three years to convince Jung's family to bring the book out of hiding. It took another 13 years to translate it.

And still, the Red Book remains incomplete. The last word Jung wrote in the Red Book is "moglichkeit," or possibility.

From its hiding place in a Swiss bank vault, the original Red Book is now on display for the first time at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan, and the translation of the massive volume is at book stores for a hefty $200.

You can get the audio and pdf online for free fiddy.

It is beyond me but still of great interest.

Thanks for that background info :hatsoff: sounds really interesting now.

free fiddy, I like that phrase.

(His work seems to have an obvious connection to the psychedelic experience. I wish jung himself could have ingested psilocybin and DMT.)

Does not one of you own a library card? How old-fashioned I must be. :2cents:
On the Hesse theme, after Siddhartha, Narcissus and Goldmund is his best.

Just finished the book and thought I'd ask y'all about the I ching. Have any of you tried doing the tosses or whatever?

I don't know much about it except what terence mckenna has mentioned and may involve tossing coins.
