Cactus ID help, big one...
    #21923897 - 07/10/15 10:13 AM (8 years, 6 months ago)

1.8 meters tall. Looks like a trichocereus to me, but hoping one of you experts could help. Thanks.

Also, when digging this up, how much space do I need to allow for roots? (This plant is for sale, I am not poaching it like some people assume.)

Poaching is illegal. If that plant is not yours, dont dig it up.

I would say it's 100% that.

They do branch when they're as old as this one. Looks like the main column was chopped as well, which initiates branching.

As for the size of the root ball to leave when digging I suppose that's up to you and what is easiest to manage. Something like the size of a wheel barrow is what I'd do. Any roots that are left will need to heal before being put in the ground again. Then the left over root ball will need to strike new roots to anchor the plant and enable it to take up water and nutrients.

Yea dude trich roots spread so you'll end up breaking or cutting a few. leave the plant out and completely dry for at least 24 to 48 hours then you can replant. when you replant give it a few days before you give it more water to allow the roots to branch out some.

That's how I've always done it when I had to replant mine.

Nice find BTW buddy:super:

cheers

Transporting it will be a bit of a pain in the ass though. I think I might need to take cuttings from 1 or 2 of the side branches so I can wrap it and lie it down in my vehicle. If i dust the cuts with charcoal and use a sterlised blade, this should keep it safe right?

Pack large chunks of polystyrene(or similar material) in between the columns to cushion and support them while in transit. After doing this tie the cactus together with stockings or other soft material to limit columns moving and breaking/cracking. If you have to cut some columns then just a sterilised blade should be fine. Columns that thick will need a hand saw or similar to get through them. They'll have a woody core that a kitchen knife won't get through easily. Any cuts should be kept dry and in a well ventilated area, preferably out doors.

Thank you so much for your help. I would like to keep it intact if I can, but 2 of those lower branches really stick out.

It does look to have been topped at some point before, then they will inevitably branch even if it isn't a usual trait.

When picking up a big pachycereus recently, I used a rug, laid the cactus lengthways, rolled over the sides, then it could be carried like a corpse
