man sentence 7 years in prison for importing drugs from silk road

July 9 2015

NEW ZEALAND- A 20-year old Dunedin student who imported a "supermarket of drugs" over the dark web, has been sentenced to a seven year prison term.
Daniel Patrick McKechnie was sentenced on 18 drug related charges when he appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday.
Those charges included the importation of methamphetamine, MDMA, and LSD, and supplying cocaine.
Combined the drugs had an estimated value of $167,000,
Appearing beside McKechnie was Mitchell Charles Connor-Dagg, also 20, who was sentenced to three years prison on five charges of being a party to importing methamphetamine and ecstasy (MDMA).
Judge Phillips noted that "criminal web" involved McKechnie accessing drugs via the dark web, via the Silk Road site, which were then sent to New Zealand between November 2014 and January 2015.
Those packages - sourced from all corners of the globe - ended up in various PO Boxes around Dunedin, opened using fake names and fake identifications by his friends such as Connor-Dagg.
"It was all planned and thought out."
Judge Phillips noted McKechnie had a "supermarket of drugs", with court documents revealing two packages of meth alone had a street value of $112,000.
A smaller amount of meth, valued at $7000, was intercepted at the Auckland Mail Centre on January 12.
McKechnie checked the PO boxes periodically, or utilised friends such as Connor-Dagg who was paid either in cash or with drugs for his own use.
Both men were very intelligent, but drugs had led them astray, Judge Phillips said.
A major aggravating factor in sentencing McKechnie was some of his offending happened while on bail for similar offences.
He noted the support in the court of their family and friends.
"Today is the day you pay the price."
Speaking outside court, Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis, of Southern District Police organised crime, said the sentences sent a strong message but also "a sad message . . . there is no winners in this".
"Police don't want to see young people of this age infront of the court, me personally I am sad to see 20-year-olds going to prison for seven years for stupid offending."
Asked whether he was surprised by the scale of the offending, he replied police were seeing "this type more and more".
Last year, Dunedin student Nicholas Peter Heatley, 22, was sentenced to four years' jail for sourcing over the dark web more than $70,000 worth of drugs into the country.
"People think they can make easy money, across the internet which is a faceless society where you don't have to front up and it is an easy way to bring drugs in," Inglis said.
Inglis had no doubt there were more cases of this type, as there was a willing market.
However those who took the risk faced serious consequences, and he praised the work of New Zealand Customs and Police for their work in bringing offenders to justice.

Justice is relative, just look at the life sentence for creating an anonymous online market over TOR that Ross Ulbricht got

I'm sure that there are plenty of heroes who haven't gone to jail for importing vast quantities of meth, and in our country, the supreme court seems to be the only place where Harper's injustices are being questioned at a legal level. Many judges actually have a deep conviction for seeing justice dealt.

That is true but this guy was no hero. He was importing methamphetamine. Living in Oklahoma where meth is an epidemic worse than any other drug I see how it ruins peoples lives first hand. Fuck that guy for importing that smut.

Meth and Heroin are clearly the most dangerous drugs of them all
So if that means 7 years, shouldn't we lesson the sentences for coke, amphetamine, LSD/mushrooms etc?
Maybe we should classify drugs by harm to society, and there Meth is clearly one of the top ones together with Alcohol and Cigarettes

He might be able to snag an early release if it's his first offense.. I would think.
Still shitty to get caught up in all that but sounds like he was playing a hefty game

Damn anyone know if they ever targeted SR consumers? I haven't seen anything about it, but I'm thinking they didn't/won't.

I agree mostly some people should just not use any drugs and some specific drugs but does any government need to make it worse for people? I mean people use and sell drugs to make money obviously there is an underlying problem. I used to think it was people just looking to make quick money it is more than that though for sure.
Really I just want to see what you think and do you really think he deserved to get a higher sentence than manslaughter? Personally I have seen people use Meth, Heroin, and Crack and still go to work and have good family lives.

IMO I think it's the user's own fault for using those hardcore drugs. The dealer can't be blamed for the fact, despite what we all know about these drugs and their horrible effect on people, they still consciously decide to "try" that drug. When they find out that everything everyone with a brain has told them was true, they act surprised like it's somehow not their fault. Now in a time where the facts on these drugs was not well known that's a completely different story, but in this day and age anyone who tries one of those drugs is a moron and is begging for that drug to ruin their life.
Not to say there isn't some exceptions, but the majority of people consciously chose to ignore the dangers of these drugs and somehow expected themselves to be immune to it's vice grip.

Yes I think he needs a worse sentence because Ive literally seen my best friends turn into people I dont know after just months of using that shit. It may not be as physically addictive or dangerous as Heroin but I think its the worst drug on the brain. It fucks your world view and you start steeling and not giving a fuck about anything except dope. Eventually you just become the drug your using IMO. So honestly yes I think that guy deserves a much worse penalty. And I think hes an asshole for selling LSD with Meth because dopeheads dont need to be on psychedelics. Thats just trouble waiting to happen.
I think selling Meth is the same as giving someone money to go buy it. Your just making a horrible substance easier for people to aquire. If people want to do that shit they should have to go through the trouble of making it. Cause the drug itself is just as dangerous in the long run as making it.

What the hell are you talking about? He didn't get arrested for weed or even pills for that matter. He was selling meth.
Edit - Just re-read OP he had some ex and LSD too, but who knows if he was selling that
