Dude Cmon that's what you buy your mom when your 13 and don't have any Ideas. She might as well buy him a sweater and a pair of dockers.
Pff. I asked for one of those last time somebody wanted to know what gift I wanted. It's awesome.

I will keep this in mind. My wok is coated cast iron, and it's been holding up okay. The only reason I went with the cast iron was because I didn't want any teflon on it so I could REALLY scrape it with the spatula. Stainless steel would have been fine too.

It's my favorite kitchen pan at the moment. My second favorite is a cast iron griddle, which is best for breakfast.

Helpful hint # 2 use coarse kosher or sea salt to clean it. If you have to get it wet put it on a burner on high cook out the water and oil it with your choice of oil.

Ya, I'm careful with my griddle that way. I use steel scrubbies to clean them both when stuff gets stuck on 'em. I've never found a need to reseason either of them though, but I cook with good amounts of oil or animal fat. Unseasoned iron will rust damn quick if you leave it wet.

No worries just clean it really good and re season it. I do mine from time to time If I want to re-season. But bacon grease is the bomb for seasoning a pan just cook a lb of cheap bacon eat the bacon or make bacon cheeseburgers then wipe it out with paper towells good to go after that.

You should want something soft but with grip. Synthetics are typically soft, but have poor grip.
Hemp is my favorite. I've heard good things about silk and bamboo, but I haven't used them.

Bunji cords dirt cheap at the truck stop. You can get the plain black or the festive braid covered ones that come in a wide assortment of colors.

Silk would be fine but you just need to tie the knots barely tight enough around the choke points. Wrist ankle neck so the hand feet and head can't pull through. Friction is not generally an issue.

rxb said: well the rice cooker woulda been great if he hadnt turned it down, good ones can keep rice fresh for up to a week. i find that very appealing, put in some rice and some seasoned water, hit a button and an hour later you have warm rice for days.
but they are expensive. and the cheap rice cookers tend to just be clutter items.
i like kitchen gadgets, measuring cups/spoons with innovative designs (as long as it doesnt take away from functionality and actually is an improvement).
if the kitchen is always a mess... i would love a clean kitchen
See, that's what I was thinking too. You can also throw in a bunch of herbs and meats and veggies in a rice cooker, and you will basically have a fresh meal or cook hot soup in it.
Zojirushi has some really nice rice cookers, some of them are going for $300 on Amazon!!!!
I think I'll wait to give him the rice cooker for when he's living in a different place though.
