Do you have personal responsibility?
    #2192233 - 12/20/03 03:44 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

If you are smart, if you have a high I.Q., do you have a personal responsibility to do something with your life, that helps society, other than sell drugs? Or to do anything else other than work in a retail store? Or to do anything else other than drop out of society just because you disagree with how society operates?

I'm sure there's a reason for being smart...

Whether or not that translates to a purpose is another question entirely.

Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

What if you have a job flipping burgers, but you have total ability to find a cure for cancer, because you're so smart. Do you have a responsibility to go to school, learn biology, physics, chemistry, etc., and then create that cure?

A responsibility to do so? No...

Would it make the world a better place if you did? Probably.

Sometimes dropping out of society is a brilliant person's contribution. Look at Edward Abbey or Thoreau, they dropped right the fuck out of society because they hated it, and we get some of the best literature ever because of it.

maybe you're thinking of moral issues...moral responsibility perhaps?

Personally, I believe in fate. I'm a Fatalist...so I believe that everybody does what they were MEANT to do in the first place, everybody is what they are for a reason beyond most of the world's recognition. But in short, everybody is what they chose to be...before they came into this lifetime.

Literature doesn't change society, does it? But let's assume it did. And think about this: WRiting a novel doesn't make you a societal drop-out. You're still adding to society through your writings.

Okay, even buying that, Skorpivo, if I am meant to be a lawyer, because I would be a good lawyer and do good for people, do I have a responsibility to go to law school? Or can I go sell drugs on a street corner and say fuck it to society?

"morally" (which can be quite subjective) I might say that you OUGHT to use your brain for better purposes that can help society...

Which is more morally acceptable? Selling crack or curing diseases?

But, in my belief, the fact remains, that you choose the difficulties, the trials and tribulations that you encounter in life, be it moral issues such as whether or not you put your good brain to use to become a doctor and save numerous lives, or be a burger-flipper by day and a crack-dealer by night. Whatever happens, is what you planned out to happen, because you wanted to LEARN from the negativity and test your soul against everything, and evolve, spiritually--be it succumbing to the negativity of society and saying fuck the world and selling drugs instead of using your prestigiously high IQ to become a lawyer, and such.

see being intelligence and being smart are totally different.

intelligence is how well you comprehend things, concepts, principles, etc. being smart is what you do with it. being smart already implies you are putting your intelligence to good use.

but then again, these are just value judgements. how well do you determine another person's life? without knowing them, being in their shoes, experiencing what they experienced. it is only the person themselves that can say what is good and what isn't for them.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

Literature doesn't change society, does it?

There is more to literature than Stephen King.

Maybe one's last life was a toughie and this time the soul just wants to get stoned and watch cartoons. Who can say?

Not sure how you equate intelligence with ambition though...

On another thread, the posts there would show agreement with this statement. Intelligent people who have learned to sell drugs are smart.

I agree with this. No one can choose for another how they should live their life. I'm just curious whether, if we are born with high intelligence, higher than the average population, do we have a duty to ourselves, or to society, to do something with it.

The Bible.

Everything has its effects on society. If a book sells a million copies, or even one hundred, it is having some effect on society. Anything that reaches an audience will have its effects.

With the exception of the Bible, not a lot of books have like completely changed society, but not much of anything completely reverses or alters something in society like that...
Peace.

*smacks forehead*

Yes, and you're probably right.  I'd like to see a study that asks people what books have influenced their decision-making processes, and what decisions were influenced.

I'd tell them that Handbook to Higher Consciousness, by Ken Keyes Jr, influenced my decision making processes, by allowing me to see how my mind works and how to be able to reach a higher state of consciousness that allows me to be more sucessful and enjoy life more on all of its levels.
