So you microwave the bottle for a shortcut instead of boiling the agar and nutes? Sorry for the noob question

So Bod I followed your directions and set my agar jar in a 120F water bath after taking it out of the pressure cooker, water bath rose to about 125 then when it dropped back down (I waited a little too long and accidentally let the water bath get down to about 116f) I took the agar jar out and put it in the SAB to start pouring. I still got pretty bad condensation and I literally couldn’t have let the agar get any cooler because by the last plate (I only poured 9) the agar was coming out lumpy/solidified.
Did I miss something? I will try the hot cup of water on top of the petri before I wrap them next time. I tried that this time but only AFTER I wrapped with parafilm and the hot cup of water melted the parafilm on top of the petri. It did seem to work decently. Didn’t really get rid of the condensation, but it consolidates it into fewer big drops instead of hundreds of teeny tiny droplets so it did make it easier to see through.

Did you let them cool and solidify in a stack?

Yes, they sat stacked in the SAB for about 30 min until I finally put them back in the bag they came in and threw eM in the closet. Only 2 are condensation free of the 8 plates I have left (one got cracked) 4 of them have too much condensation to see into and another 2 have moderate condensation, not enough to call nearly opaque like the other 4 but still too much to tell what’s really going on inside.
It’s not a huge deal right now because I’m not using food coloring or anything so I can see into them from the bottom. But soon I would like to start using recipes that call for stuff that will make the agar less clear but I would like to get the condensation tamed down before I start using different recipes. I guess because it’s such a small amount of dishes? If I pour more plates at a time and make bigger stacks of them then less of them will have condensation, right?

a stack of nine should do alright. I leave to cool in stacks of ten and i do fine. Maybe the room you poured in was really cold. I don't know. It's odd.

I had the cold room problem last time I poured.
Usually only the top of the stack is wet but this time besides the normal condensation on the top plates all the other ones had a white circle of mist that looked like a fogged up car window, and it got smaller each plate down.
I’ve been either leaving the bad ones unwrapped in the box hoping they dry or propping them up on their sides for a day so it all pools up and then dumping it out in the SAB.
I got a little over zealous trying to shake a drop off earlier and the whole agar circle fell out lol.

My apartment is kept at 68 during the day, 66 at night. It was probably 67-68F when I poured. I read someone saying to store them upside down. Which I did for a couple days. Then I was reading in the archives today and came across a post by RR that said not to do that with an explanation as to why. Gonna have to start setting a hard rule to not follow anyone’s advice without a TC under their name. I know there’s people that know what they speak that don’t have the tag but there’s way for a noob to know who’s who and who knows what.

what was the reason to not store them upside down?
Only thing I can think of would be then the water would pool up on the agar instead of the lid.

Lots of highly experienced people have idiosyncratic reasons for doing or not doing things. And RR is no exception. He is an innovator and a legend but still human and therefore occasionally fallible. Take it all with a grain of salt but if someone with a recent sign up date and no ratings disagrees with a TC its probably wrong. But someone who’s been doing it for a long time with lots of good ratings can still give grwat advice, and some disagreements are based personalilty difference, preference or idiosyncrasies.
I would never store unwrapped plates upside down. But after they are good and sealed I see absolutely no reason not to

Why not to store upside down by RR
Not sure where the original post is that bodhi was quoting in there. I actually found that post by searching for the word “condensation” posted by bodhi because I knew he has some advice about it somewhere in this thread but I didn’t wanna search through every page again. That thread was the first thing that popped up and I found it even more helpful than what I was looking for.

Thanks for the TEK. I’m new to all of this and don’t know much about mycology or chemistry so I have a lot to learn. I think I might have misread your tek and ordered to many ingredients.
You put: “ I personally like to use, in give or take this order Grain Soak Water agar(save water from hydration of grain spawn add 20g/L Agar-Agar powder) BRF agar (20g/L BRF and Agar-Agar) MEA, malt extract agar. Use light malt extract for homebrewing at 20g/L YPD, yeast peptone dextrose agar, I buy this premade and use as is PDA, I just kind of wing this one every time I use it”
I misread that as ingredients to all mix together to make a batch of agar but now realize these are 5 different recipes right? I also want to clarify, the Grain Soak Water agar is literally just water saved from hydrating the grain spawn mixed with Telephone agar-agar powder? That’s it? It’s that easy? Just the water and powder? I feel like I’m overthinking everything so if you can clear it up I’d appreciate it. Thanks for the awesome tek!

Anyone have tips/tricks for cleaning the media bottle after pouring? Found it a little hard to get all the hardened agar bits stuck to the inside of the bottle. Surely someone here has figured out a really quick or simple way to clean them

I’ve alway just left it until the next time.
I did have mold growing in the bottle for the first time last week, so I squirted some dish soap in then filled it a third up with water shook it real well and let it sit all day, cleaned everything out.
Besides that filling it with water and pcing or boiling it should work.
