are you referring 2% as in 2% of total volume?

Bod, thanks for the tek. Just poured my first plates after using no pours for 2 years. Been loving it so far. Few questions.
When you pour plates you aren't using right then, do you let them solidify in the SAB, then place them inside their sleeves for storage inside the SAB as well? Also, do you have a preference for vented vs non-vented and slippable vs. stackable vs. semi-stackable petris?

He means 2% w/v (weight by volume). For example, most agar recipes call for 2% agar so you weight out 20g agar powder for every liter of water.

Solidify then wrap or sleeve for later. All in sab
Vented is what i usually pick up I don't think it makes much difference. I get slipable usually but any work.

Aight thanks. I did my first transfers using my plates last night. It was surprising how much faster I could do a transfer vs a no-pour plate. Really wish I would've started working with this tek earlier. While no-pours are great for doing a tiger drop, I don't think I'll be using them anymore other than my final plate I plan to knock up my grains with.

I totally agree - no pours are great for tiger drops, but poured plates are where it’s at for cleaning. Bods tek here was one of the first I tried and I’ve never looked back.

I wanted to like no pour dishes but for me idk i cant deal with them. When people talk about how SAB work blows compare to FH work i feel that way about dishes vs Tupperware. Im glad no pour exists but im glad i can buy cases of dishes easy more.

I like pour agar alright, I don’t like the cost of shipping to Canada. I did hate pouring in a SAB though now that I have a hood I still mostly use no pour.

The only real complaint I have about poured plates is that I can’t reuse the light, plastic dishes. I have some Pyrex ones but they’re pricy, heavy, and it’s time consuming to oven sterilize them. If they made some reusable plastic plates I’d be in heaven.
And I wish I could afford (and had the space) for a flow hood! SAB work ain’t so bad, tbh.

There’re two types of petri dishes I can buy in place I live - ventilated dishes and not ventilated. Ventilated dishes are made with little insets between dish and cap to provide some air exchange. Nonventilated made hermetically without any air exchange. What type of dishes is the best choice for mushroom growing?

I’ve used the vented plastic ones with no problems, and the Pyrex ones I have are not vented and work fine as well. Not sure there’s a “best” option but I’ve seen others use the vented ones with no problems so if I had to choose I’d chose those.

This was my first attempt with agar... I have some left overs from 9 months ago that were in my fridge and there is a lot of water in them i guess from condensation. Are they still good to use? im trying to put these in my grain spawn today (front and back pictures of 3 dishes )

Bod, you said to Sterilize at 15PSI for 20m.
agar is sterilized in 20m at 15psi. I always usually go to 20m I would not go longer than 30-45m you risk caremelization of sugars in your media.
if I have a PC that has a temp of 12 psi. is it Okay to put it in the pc for 40 mins? or what amount of time do you suggest?

250F isn't really hot enough to caramelize. And people routinely throw agar in with their grain for over 1.5 hours
12psi 40 sounds good

Bod, do you have any way you store your grain soak water? I just put all my extra grain soak water in my pyrex bottle, closed it tight, then threw it in the fridge. Assuming this is fine, about how long would you say it will be good in the fridge for?

3-4 days probably. It's unpasteurized highly nutritional product. Freeze it for long storage

Hey bod, why does my agar keep forming black specks? Sometime it happens before the cycle, but it’s consistently a good amount of black flakey stuff that forms at some point during the PC cycle. Is this caramelization? It’s MEA, usually maltoferm and telephone agar
