5DGISD said: hey BOD....thanks for the tek, I'm going to give agar a try for the first time. I have all I need as far as materials but I have a question....what about the petri dishes....I have a pack of glass dishes but I don't see anyone explaining whether or not you need to sterilize the dishes first before you pour.....my heart and mind says yes but.......if so, what is a good procedure for this. Can it be done the same time you sterilize your agar.
I wrap my glass dishes in foil and then bake at 400F in my oven for about 2 hours.

hmm.....I like this Idea. Whenever I use my PC to sterilize my dishes, I always end up with condensation in the dish. I going to give this a try.....thanks

I was under the impression that a pressure cooker was required to do agar. This tek says otherwise. What are the risks of using steam sterilization rather than a PC? What are my chances of success with steam sterilization?

If you live in Africa and you have no technology I would suggest steam sterilization of agar. For everyone else get a PC. Yes you can steam sterilize agar. I would go no less than 1 hour in a steam bath You can even steam sterilize grain spawn with no pressure (takes 8 hours)

I have good luck with 6g BRF, 9 or 10g Agar in 400 ml water. Or 400ml grain cook water and 9-10g agar

Took the bottle out of the pressure cooker and there was sediment at the bottom. I’m using ground up potato flakes for my nutrients. I shook the bottle up and am letting it sit. Should I put it back in the cooker if there’s still sediment and for how long? I did 20mins at 15psi.

sediment is fine and will happen with some nutes unless you boil it well and and strain it well before cooking. gently swirling the bottle around between sleeves will help evenly distribute the nutrition throughout the plates. don't swirl to hard or you'll end up with a bunch of bubbles.

Okay, I’ll do that when I’m pouring. Waiting for it to cool down. In the mean time I’ll be setting up my work area. Thanks for the reassurance Verum.

First plates! Took three clone samples from a monster KSS, and streaked three plates with Ecuador spores. Was going to use my other four plates but they had condinsation on them. Doing the warm water thing right now and will store them for later use.

Hey everyone, do you have a recommendation on a microwave that's affordable and fits the bottle? Mine's too small to hold a 500ml agar bottle, and going place to place through craigslist and other places seems difficult. It'd be easier to sort by make and model through those resources

I doubt anyone knows the make and model of their microwave and if they did its probably 10+ years old and not made anymore. Just go to Walmart and pick one up lol

i don't know how small your microwave is but i have to set my bottles at an angle to fit them in. i take the spinning table thing out, lay a quart jar on it's side and lay my captain morgan handle at a 45 degree(ish) angle.

I’ve had them around for months with no ill effect Just keep them in a place with a steady temperature and have them wrapped well
