You don't need a thermometer. Plastic are the ones I used And no they are disposable, not for re-use

Plastic dishes are fine but you cannot reuse them (they melt).
Eyeballing the temp is gonna be tough. My BRF agar appears to still be boiling at 130-140F, and I had no way to know it was even close to 120F. I don’t know about you but I’m not good at eyeballing temperature!

Thanks in particular to the suggestions of the 500ml Media bottle, it has made pouring way less messy than when I was using a qt mason jar as my media bottle. Also the suggestion of a digital thermometer (I got a beeping meat thermometer that allows me to set my desired temp and then it beeps when that temp is reached). Now I have very limited condensation and no chunky plates from missing my perfect pour window, that and the fact that my steaks are always perfectly done now no matter how thick they might be
Thanks again BOD!!

i own a butt ton of thermometers and sometimes just can't be bothered to go and find one before i pour. i just put my hand on the side of the bottle and wait for a couple seconds. if it makes me uncomfortable (hurts) it's too hot. if i can keep my hand there and recognized that it's quite hot but doesn't hurt it's ready.
i suppose this just depends on how tough you are though. it's pretty obvious. you don't have to pour at an exact temperature

Hi Bod, not sure if this has already been asked/answered but I watched a YouTube vid where the dood sterilized his agar in a jar in a PC then cooled it, then in his SAB took spore straight from his print with a flamed exacto and put it in to his agar (in the jar)
When it had colonised he transferred the myc/agar straight from the jar to his WBS jar, doing away with the pouring in to dishes. Have you tried this or something similar?

It looks like no pour would be a good starting point for noobs like myself who might be a bit daunted by the thought of using agar though?

I’m also a noob but I followed Bods TEK here and it was easy. I’m not perfect (my Petri dishes have condensation) but I actually find it fun. And the BRF agar is what I did the first time since I had it from my PF cakes. I’ve got several cultures running now. It’s a great way to learn more about mycelium and how it grows!

I messed up somewhere in here, theses are my steps.
1. I used my water from when I simmered my oats, strained through shirt about 400 ml total with 20 g agar powder included..
2. Shook well to mix then , microwaved to get dissolved and shook well Then,I pc’d 20 min.
3 let pressure drop to zero then closed cap on bottle and shook again.
4. Came back in about 4 hours it cooled too much and solidify, so I warm water bath it but a giant clump would not remelt no matter how hot I got the bottle/liquid my infrared therm showed up to 190 degree. Still wouldn’t liquify. Ended up pouring plates and only got about 9 poured the rest was stuck in bottle..
Can someone tell me where I messed up here.... thanks

You let your agar solidify before pouring it in the dishes You told me where you messed up lol, the first sentence of #4 there is where you say exactly what you did wrong
To re melt the agar you need to use a microwave or put the bottle in boiling water for an hour or so

Here Bod, I'm starting agar tek, so I have my agar and potato staŕch and I just did a test run to try out quantities etc before making more to inoculating with real spores.
After pouring I let them cool then put them fridge to store for a day. The plates have set but there's a very thin layer in the bottom that hasn't set fully.
Could this be not being mixed or not enough agar? (I used about a tsp to 200ml water)

Probably. They shouldn't go in the fridge before being used tho. But even at room temperature they should be completely solidified in an hour or less after pouring, usually minutes.

It would liquify eventually just would take hours in a water bath. Heat transfer is slow that way.
Microwave works but you have to watch it. If you don't it will foam over on you and make a mess, I guarantee it.

Question I can’t seem to figure out the answer for: if an agar plate grows out all the way, is it safe to assume it is contam free, or could there be lurking contamination somewhere? I have a few clone plates and T1 plates that are grown out and no visible contamination but are they clean and usable?
