Hi Bod,

Can I clarify that for the grain soak water agar recipe you just need 400ml of the grain soak water and 8g of agar agar mixed up in a media vessel before moving onto the microwave/PC stage?

Thanks for spending time sharing this information with us all, I hope to post up some progress once I'm ready.

Cheers

Yes 20 grams per liter agar or 2%w/v or 8grams into 400mL
That's how much agar I use regardless of recipe for normal plates to solidify appropriately

Hey bod I have a question,
I made some petri dishes last week but I stored my agar in the Freezer, so is frozen right now, lol can I still use it? should I re sterilize it? Can you even re-sterilize agar?
I was thinking of putting it inside a water bowl and heat up the water slowly until is liquid again.

It won't go back to liquid sitting in hot water. You'd have to put it in boiling water for an hour or so you have to microwave it to melt if again

You can re sterilize I suggest you dont

Greetings all,

Hope it's cool if I post somewhat noobish questions in this thread:

I'm getting ready to prepare some agar, and I'm curious about what modifications (if any) need to be done to the vessel the agar will be in.

I don't currently possess a media bottle. Do regular glass vessels with metal caps require a hole to prevent it from sealing while being PC'd? Or do I just leave the lid slightly loose like the media bottle tek?

I'm probably just going to use a mason jar; the pouring doesn't seem as awkward as I expected, it's on hand, and easily modded if need be.

In addition to this, do agar bottles that get PC'd need any kind of filtration? If so, all I've got on hand for the next few days is postage-envelope style Tyvek. Would this suffice?

Saw that the RR Agar video mentions such things, but I just wanted to make sure that it was still the way to go.

Edit: Also, if I could get some recipe clarification, that would be awesome too - I'm looking to use a PDA recipe (The one I have written down is 9G Agar / 7G Dextrose / 5G instant Potatoes, 500ml Water), since I already have the Agar and honey/corn syrup on hand. Only thing throwing a wrench in it all is the potatoes. Thought my instant kind was fine, but upon closer inspection, I realize it has butter and cream added in there.

I have a different boxed kind, that appear to be regular cuts of red potatoes, just dehydrated (box says it's for a scalloped dish). Are these usable if I grind them into a powder in a blender?

If neither of the above are viable, I'll just going to boil 150g of sliced potatoes in 500ml of water and use that.

Thanks! Haven't been part of a forum in a while, and I'm looking forward to posting a ton on here.

You definitely need a filter. Pressurized boiling agar exploding all over you and the kitchen is a serious bitch. It's very dangerous and a bummer to clean up.

I guess i shouldn't say definitely. Maybe if heated and cooled slowly enough it wouldn't explode.

Hey bod, I'm trying this for my first time (following your teks) - want to do 2x unmodified box, looking at up to 16 quart jars  for this ... Would I be better off doing ajar to a couple of master jars then g2g or do a bunch of agar plates? I've got enough plates to go for the latter.

Appreciate your input, cheers

yes even once it's boiling there can still be some chunks I microwave in short bursts and then swirl it to try to melt it all. it's hard to re-melt agar. it doesn't just melt like you might expect

I usually get a doughnut shaped piece of solid agar in my microwave even after you visably see boiling. just keep going till it's all melted. boil overs suck dick so be careful
